Me and a friend have tried to play a LAN game last week but that failed miserably. My friend has WinXP Pro on his laptop and my PC has WinHome installed. Both computers seem to fail to recognize eachother and even the LAN IPs don't seem to find eachother when I tried to ping them from one computer to the other... It's a crossed cable, but that should work fine noramlly, is there something that I missed when I configured the LAN option on both computers?

Is it a bad thing if there is smoke coming out of my case?

It is possible. in fact my friend and I are playing civ 3 on a home/pro network right now. You may need to run the network wizard to make sure both computers are setup correctly: workgroup, dhcp server, and ip address.
Try the wizard on one computer, make the network disk and then run the disk on the other computer.

Ok, gonna try that, and the firewalls on the comps are all disabled.

My cousin and I have a similar setup. I have XP Pro on my comp and my cousin has XP Home on his laptop. Make sure the firewalls are disabled, and run Netowrk Setup Wizard. That should do the trick.
