Dear all,

I plead with you all to help me out with this.
I don't have the time to research all of the possibilities and would love it if you guys could point me in the direction of a new card.
My x800pro has just about had it. Strange visuals now appearing!
:(

I want to stick with AGP for now please.
I've got Athlon 64 3400+ (I think)
1g ram

Would rather spend under £150.....£100 would be better.
I play COH and a little BF2.

Many, many thanks from London.

Graham

I don't know the exchange rate, but look at the Radeon X1600 Pro, or better yet a GeForce 7600GT. Depending on how long you need your AGP system to last.

X800GTO - unlock the pipelines and u have an X800XL, wich u can overclock to an X800XT.

7600 GT - dont buy, X800GTO is better if u unlock.

X1950 Pro - best one, unless u want to unlock the X800GTO, and then u will have to decide beetween this and the X800GTO. They are both great for the price tag they come with. needless to say, if u dont unlock, buy this.

No no no, the 7600GT is better regardless what you do to an X800GTO.

many thanks for your time guys. It's much appreciated.
I'm not into unlocking stuff to behonest mainly because I have no idea how to...is it safe?

So, 7600 GT....anyone want to disagree?

:D

Thanks again from London UK.

next question (if anybody would be kind enough)

When I look for prices there seem to be many variations of the 7600 GT.
Is there a particular brand I should look for or maybe one to avoid?

For example, I found the below....what's with the GS OC bit?

BFG GeForce 7600 GS OC 512MB DDR2 HDTV/DVI (AGP) - Retail
420MHz Core, 512MB 800MHz DDR2 Memory, Lifetime Warranty with BFG Direct.

I notice the core speed of 420MHz given above is slower than the specs given in this forums sticky thread relating to the best video card for the money. Should I be looking for a 500MHZ card? Anything else to look out for?
It's a minefield!

Thanks.

i have a x800 gto. how do i unlock the other 4 pipes? i'm just trying to eke some more time out of my agp system. it's an older dell dimension 8250 and has a bios conflict with the newer cards. would a x850 pro be an upgrade?

7600 GT and 7600 GS are different (memory bandwidth and core speed I think, with the first being most important)

Look for a GT specifically, GDDR3 if possible. Gainward generally do good and interesting tweaks to their cards.

http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Pro [...] tID=499563 looks ok to me

http://www.komplett.co.uk/k/ki.asp?sku=327507 same one I think.

All I can find for now, there is a leadtek elsewhere, evga might be a good buy if you can find one, so that you can step-up if you need to later (<90days).

You meant to say:

The X800 GTO is ALMOST AS GOOD if you unlock, and UNLOCKING IS NOT GUARANTEED.

The 7600 GT is a wayyy better card stock, and assuming you can unlock, the GTO is on par at best.

7600 GT is a better bet.

also to add to cleeves point, the X800 doesn't do SM3.0 I believe, and now there is at least 1 game that demands it.

one last thing lads....

My bro has a P4 2.8, 1g ram....is the 7600 gt worth getting for this rig.
I don't want to put a great graphics card in an old machine if it's not going to be worth.

Thanks again, you've all been very helpful.

with another Gig of RAM it'll be as good as a mid end offering from before C2D came and upset the performance applecart, so i'd say it'd be fine.

Although the X800 is a good card, the 7600 uses the latest sm3.0 and supports all nvidia latest features. The X800 is outdated but still is a very good card so either choice would be good here.Goodluck.
