do the cards have to be 100% identical?

so make? gt? gtx? ram amount?

say for instance could i pair a xfx 7800 gtx 256mb with a xfx 7950 gtx 512mb?

I'm pretty sure a 7950 won't work with a 7800. 3 GPUs? The load balencing would be all out of whack.

Simple answer NO.

The have to be of the same GPU ie 2xG70, 2xG71 or 2xG80 and of the same class ie 2xGT's or 2xGTX's unless you want to get into BIOS flashing of the vid card, to make one match the other, which could end up leaving you with a dead card. But memory core speed and RAM speed DOES NOT (not 100% sure about the size though) have to match and also as far as I am aware the two cards DO NOT have to be from the same manufacturer and as I'm using an Asus and an XFX together I'm willing to stand by that. HTH

Need same GPU type.

7900GT with any 7900GT and etc.

Brands, clock speeds, and memory size can be different.
