Yes, I cool my 4 HDs with two fans I have mounted at the side of them.

I mean specifically the hard drive, something that is solely in your case to cool your hard drive or at least that's its main purpose.

I have a case fan housed in the hard drive cage that blows air directly onto the hard drive.
I also use an air filter on my intake fans to keep the dust build up in my case to a minimum.

Yes, I just placed a CPU fan on top of my Maxtor...strangely enough, the stability of the system skyrocketed, heck, I've the ran my computer almost non stop for 3 days now. All from my retail Athlon XP 1800+ fan. I didn't even use thermal paste...

I've got four SCSI 7200 rpm units (2 IBM, 2 Atlas) and a pair of dual HD fans in the front of the case, plus a bottom mount HD fan on the lower IBM. The front fans are staggered around the CDRW, and above the tape drive, which runs noticably warm during backups (It's an old Exabyte 8mm I got for a song, and I have a source of dirt cheap tapes, so it's worth it!) I had a Ricoh CDRW before, and it tended to run rather warm when writing full CD-Rs. The fans helped it as well. The Plextor has it's own case fan, and hasn't shown any problems; writes faster, and runs cooler !
The case intake fan is filtered with industrial filter material from a computer rack we got rid of at work. I'm hoping the stuff I have will last until they decide to discontinue another unit. The newer units we're getting have cleanable filters that aren't nearly as thick. Modding those to fit in the case front would be a bit trickier!
