Rather than continue to pour through the various threads for the 100th time Ill just ask.

SITUATION - Building a new PC to act as my primary, with my current P4 to be relegated to file/media server-backup on my network...since all my wife's applications are on it I might be looking to have it connected to the monitor/keyboard via a switch so her work crap isnt clogging up my toy.

Ill be cannabilizing the DVDRW and X-Fi Platinum from the old box, and im fine for a monitor

Im mostly interested in strategy, fps, BUT if theres a resource hogging game out there thats all the buzz I want to be able to run it at better than average settings if the need be.

Im back in school so CAD and other engineering applications are a possibility, and I want to have the POSSIBILITY to do video editing, alot of Photoshop, and OC when I have the time. I could go either way as far as Vista is concerned

CPU- C2D 6600 seems like a popular choice here
Video - 7900GT? I want the option of expanding to SLI or a DX10 card in the future (1-1.5 years), but still want to play most everything at full detail and 1280-1024 NOTE- I also want to be able to upgrade to a widescreen monitor without other hardware changes.
Mobo - No idea, again, SLI/x-fire, higher end DX10 Video cards, and possible OC'ing should be addressed
Memory - 2 gig, with possible oc'ing
Power - no idea need help here
Case - you suggest
HDD - since the backup PC will be storing the media/documents, I dont need deep storage for this box

BUDGET - would like to go 1000-1500 (less if possible) but can go above if it is a good value and achieves my goal of being future proof with full expandibility.

Thanks, and sorry for asking the same question asked 100 times.

BTW, THE SWITCH, is this even feasable? The backup runs XPpro, can it be used as an application server instead? If the switch is an option, what do you reccomend?

I guess I need to be more specific.

What should I look fr in the multitude of memory/mobo options.

For what I need, is a 680 board necessary...I would hate to buy a bord that needs replacing within the next 2 years
