I recently installed my scanner which is a Mustek 1200 UB. I installed
while I was in the administrator account. It works perfect in that account.
When I logged off and tried to use it in one of the limited accounts on
mycomputer, it comes up with a dialog box saying "The scanner is not
connected. Please check the cable". My question is how do I get it to
workon the limited account?

Thanks in advance to anyone who can come up with a solution for this
problem.

Jake

That is a old scanner, you will have to get new drivers if available.

Most applications weren't designed for this type of multi-user environment.
Such applications need to be installed in each specific user's account to
whom you wish to grant access.

First, be sure the account to which you wish to grant access is set to
administrator and not limited. Install the applications to the same folder
in which it was originally installed. This will look the same as one
install on your hard drive but create the pointers necessary for this user
to have access to the application.

Once the installation is complete, you can return the account to its limited
status if that is what you want and the user should still have access.

I tried what you said with changing the account type but still didnt work.
I did get the scanner with a computer with Windows 98 back in 1999 , so as
you say it wouldnt be designed for a multi user operating system. I
downloaded the drivers off the net but I reckon they must be the same
drivers that were shipped with it when the scanner first came out. Thanks
anyway for the suggestion

Jake

Actually, Mustek has likely updated the drivers since the scanner came out
which doesn't necessarily mean it's being supported in XP or if it is, that
it would work in a multi-user environment.

That said, if you are installing software bundle with your scanner, it is
unlikely that the software bundle that came with the scanner has been
updated and usually they aren't since that software comes from third
parties. Such software often interferes with the function of the scanner in
XP unless it was designed specifically for XP.

If you have installed such software, that might be the issue. You might try
removing everything, the bundle, the scanner and start over, only installing
the drivers and trying to do the same in the other account(s) as I
originally described if it isn't recognized in the other account and see if
that resolves the issue.
