I just enterred the 21'rst century and signed up for DSL from my old dial up. I'm running Zone Alarm and keep my virus scanner and freeware spyware programs updated. A friend advised me to get a router to avoid internet intrusion, but all I see routers listed for are networking. So far, I only have one PC and no other computers so I have no networking needs.
If you have only 1 PC then a software firewall (ZoneALarm or the inbuilt Windows firewall) is sufficient. Buying a router just for firewall is an overkill.
I recommend adding routers for the xtra layer of protection. Things happen alot faster with dsl. If you have a stealth feature in zone alarm, activate it. Have it NOT respond to ping. Responding lets the sniffers know hardware exist, and increases the chance of attack.
