I was told that the Opteron 165, 170, 175 and 180 OC like mad, apparently this is not true in my case. Am I doing something wrong? I have nothing OC on my system. A few tips would greatly appreciated.

Im so pissed that I'm close to drilling a small hole in the corner of this CPU and making it the most expensive key chain I have ever had.

so plz help me out here :D

It sounds like YOU need to read through an overclocking guide or two. I'm SURE your OC issue is pure usererror.

I am new to these forums but, I would start by answering WhyFi. No, he didn't mean drivers, he meant a memory divider, which is what he said, heh. I just ordered an Opteron 170 and it will be here in a day or two. These CPU's DO OC very well, but you need the proper Motherboard, RAM Settings, Cooling, Etc.

Can you plz explain what a memory divider is?

Im running 2x 1 gb Corsair Pro series with a timing of 3.3.3.8.

a memory divider is where you have the memory running at a division of the speed of the cpu (the fsb at least) so for example:

Lets say your fsb is 400, by default your memory divider is 1:1 which means the memory fsb runs at the same fsb as the cpu.

Now lets say you oc your fsb to 500, and things start to become unstable. you could at this point use a memory divider to clock down your memory fsb alone, and not your cpu. EX: lets say our memory divider is 4:3. Our cpu fsb may be running at 500mhz, but our memory is at 375, which is 3/4 of 500mhz.

Now i have a little bit of experiece overclocking (nothing extremely new, just athlon xp's and old k6-2's) but usually this will happen when the cpu is not getting enough voltage to remain stable. have you tried raising the cpu voltage? in my experience the cpu starts wanting more voltage around the first 200mhz over stock clock, which would be exact in his case.

currently its at a 1:1 ratio, but my mobo gives me the option to do it below 1:1 or above it.

I just got one to.
I got the CCBBE 0610DPMW stepping. So far I tested it at 2.7Ghz at 1.4Volts
What is your stepping? Regardless, you should be able to do at least 2.4.

Try this:
Set memory to DDR 333 or lower
Set HTT Mult to 4X
Set CPU to 10X
Set HTT 240
Set CPU volts to 1.4

This should give you 2.4Ghz I may have missed some other setting, in that case, READ THE OVERCLOCKING GUIDE

are you trying to o.c. through the bios.

if so the first thing would be to bump your fsb up say 10mhz.
if it is 200 go to 210mhz.

download cpu-z and look at your timings. clock speed and such.

this is my x2 4400
normally or stock it should read
2200 on the core speed
200 on the bus speed

http://img176.imageshack.us/img176/206/capturewiz024ci9.jpg

this is the memory settings in cpu-z
freq should be 200 at stock
fsb:dram should be 1.1

look at yours and let us know or better yet post it.
