Hi peeps. I was wondering if anyone here knows about the power wattage consumption of next generation direct x 10 600 series cards. I bought a computer in early 2006 with only 300 watts power supply unit and am looking to upgrade with the next gen Dx10 600 series such as 8600GT or X2600pro/XT thus was wondering so. If anyone here has inside scoop on such matter, please post a reply for me. Thanks in advance peeps!

300W will not be enough i can tell you that a safe bet would be 480W for the 8600 but until we actually see the cards it will all be speculation

You can never have too big a power supply (almost), go for 500+ and you'll be safe, or go for 400 and a supplemental. Go for a quality powersupply, feel free to post you choices here and we'll tell you what we feel about them. If you have a 600W supply and only pull 300W it'll run cooler and quieter (generally), and you'll only pull 300W (+inefficiencies.)

Alot depends on how many other devices are attahced to your machine. I.e optical drives and hard drives etc. Personally if I was buying a a new unit now and looking to power a DX10 card I would go for 600w or above. It sound alot but the costs are coming down all the time. I have a 500W Antec which has been faultless that cost about £55.00. I would go for a 600w around £60.00 mark. Always go with a good quality unit as the cheaper units can't always regulate a consistenet current and you can end up with your PC re-booting all the time or worse still damaging some of your components.

You'd need a new power supply for pretty much ANY card that comes out in the high end, and has done so within the past few years.

Total wattage is a rating to ignore, though; right now, I've found that Fortron-Source makes a really great 450w unit that sells for around $50US on NewEgg; it's got a pair of +12v rails that add up to some 33 amps, which means it's sufficient to power any single-card setup you can throw at it; that includes a GeForce 8800GTX, and will also cover whatever R600 shows up as.

I don't want to seem like I'm thread hijacking, but I just wanted to get your opinions on the PSU that I bought recently.

Here's the link: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6817194003

I was hoping to be able to run an 8600GT or something when those magically appear in the next few months or so, but if I magically acquired an 8800GTX or GTS, would it run without any problems?

My system is fairly low-power (E6600, 1 250gb 7200rpm sata-300 HD, 1 IDE dvd burner, 2GB 667mhz ram, and is currently on integrated graphics)

2x 22A 12V rails looks good to me, I've got a 4 year old enermax in my old system, still strong. I think that requirements are coming in as low 30's so 44-fudge factor = 38ish should be fine.

Just be aware that each 12v rail can provide up to 22 amps individually. But combined the 12v rails can only provide up to 32 amps or 384w in total.

Looking that the sticker on the PSU will provide that information.

hence the 44 subtract a fudge factor later in my reply, I was reckoning on high 30's. But I only have specs as per newegg to go on, and the fact that enermax are quite good. In fact this one might have been in one of the PSU roundups.
