I was checking my external Maxtor HDD with chkdsk, I hadn't in a while. It said J:\my music\etc\..\..\best house album cd 2 folder was unreadable. I left cmd, and I thought to have a look at the folder in question using explorer.
Oh FFFF, the screen went blue (XP pro) and had to do a memory dump. I restarted the PC and it worked, I tried to look at the external HDD and the thing is a shell, its now in RAW format and the only thing I have tried to do, is use windows recovery and the command fixmbr.exe. Nothing else has been effected.
I had ontracks easyrecovery pro look at it and there are with a full disk diagnostic see pic, and have tried EASUS data recovery wizard pro demo 3, this may be able to recovery something but no file structure.
its the first time I have used that so if that doesn't work try this if your interested in what ontracks programs displays.
I really need the file structure intact. Its a sizable hard disk 250Gb and its almost full.
Anyone know what to do, how this happened and should I send it to a recovery specialist.
I needed a new HDD anyway so I am now going to buy one this weekend, it will be needed for many recovery programs to write the recovered data, and see if the data recovered is anygood.
I think the HDD can be restored to the way it was before the ... whatever it is that happened. All are welcome, I would like to hear what you think.
