Update:
What CPU series fits and works with this chipset? Will a 600 series P4 work? Where can I find this answer?

Old posting:
I have a Sony desktop, R-series, RA-810G, with a P4 (Prescott) 550 at 3.4 GHz, with Hyper-Threading, in a LGA 775 socket, on a 915 chipset mobo.

I want to know what would be a good CPU upgrade. The machine is running Win MCE 2005. I watch over-the-air, HD TV shows and do some video editing and hope to stream HD shows through media extender(s) soon.

What CPU's will work for this application? What would be the most powerful CPU I could put in this, short of an Extreme Edition (way too expensive)?

Sony just reads the manual to me when I ask them questions.

Please advise

The best and possible only upgrade you could do is a Pentium D posibbly a 940D series. I doubt that P915's VRM can support the Conroe cores. Along with the Pentium D, I'd look into a good graphics card upgrade and good RAM.
