I am having a new computer built (cause I don't know alot about them) and I'm stuck on the video card. Is it worth getting an 8800 card now or waiting till DX10 games and more (possibly better) DX10 cards are available? I was thinking a mid-range card now like a 7900GS (approx. $300 in AUS) and then upgrading next year as I'm concerned the current 8800's will be found wanting when DX10 games are released?
Also if anyone sees any obvious problems with the other parts below please say so, I am trying to get a machine that will play at 1600 X 1200 with max settings.
The rest of the system is:
Core 2 Duo E6600
ASUS P5B Deluxe
2Gig Corasir XMS PC6400 DDR2 RAM 4-4-4-12
Seagate 250GB HD
22" LCD
Hey there,
I'd wait (I am) for the software and to see what the ATI cards are going to be like (that and price, waaay too pricey for my tastes). I'm currently building a new system not too dissimilar to yours (320Gb HD x2 being the main difference) and I'm lumping for a ATI X1950XT (256Mb) which should last me for a year or so. During which time the DX10 hardware/software should have matured a bit and the prices should have settled down a bit.
The 8800 would be a nice card and run all the current games at that res very nicely. If you can afford it, go for it. I also am upgrading to DX10 cards once i see what ATI has to offer.
Well, expect fully DX10 supported (DX10 required) games in about a year. And in a year, 8800s won't be top-line anymore. If you want best performance you can get, go for it.
7800s were top-line, until 7900s and X1800s came out, but the 7800s still could run games maxed out.
why not get dx10 compliant --- if you need
to upgrade in ----uuuhhhhmmmm---- a year or so
then money now spent on other card will be wasted.....
besides an 8800gts kiks ass and in most cases is
better than an ati sli config - which is more expensive....
....my 8800 gts is on the way and i cant wait......
The 8800GTX is the only card available that'll play Oblivion and F.E.A.R. at that resolution while staying above 60FPS always. Ask RobsX2 about it as he recently got his 8800GTX and now plays Oblivion at 1280x1024 with HDR, all details maxed, and 8xAA+16xAF.
