I am big brother at work We use Websense.

Tom's Hardware is classified as Technical. Doesn't matter what the page is or what I'm at. It only checks to find out what the website it.. doesn't matter where I go on that site. But then again, I monitor it so what do I care? Only catch is that if I give myself special rights, I have to grant it to everyone in my group which would be Corporate. If I wanted to go on porn sites, everyone in Corporate would be porn sites. That would be an issue because I would have to open all porn sites, not selective ones. Its an HR thing.

If you fire someone for surfing porn sites, everyone in that group also needs to be checked to make sure they were not surfing porn. Everyone gets the same punishment.. so if your boss spends all day on Ebay and then you get fired or laid off for spending too much time on Ebay, you reference him and he'll get the same punishment as you as long as there is not work related justification for him being on it.

Besides that, I can always wipe the logs and no one will have a clue.

I know. Which is why I don't bother wiping the logs. Everyone here is an adult and employed.

Technically, I can't actually monitor anyone's web surfing habits unless I'm asked by an HR person to pull a report on someone. Though we do send out weekly reports to HR and Controllers so they can review. They only show up in categories.

Being in IT the SOX Auditing is heavy. The best part is a bunch of non-technical people created this log in order to maintain security and have checks and balances. What they don't get is that IT can go through, do what we want, then wipe our trail and no one will have a clue. They didn't add the checks and balances in on IT.. only on everyone else.

I found out we're the 268th or 266th largest company in the world.

They pay for everything. I get 50% tuitiion up front and they pay for all my books up front. The other 50% is covered if I get an A. 80% of a B, 50% if I get a C.

Plus I get $2,500 in training a year and if no one else uses their training money, I can use it. This year I used $4,500 getting MCSE training. This coming year I'm going to use the money to do MCSE certs which is like $700 total, then do a $5k Cisco training.

Toledo sucks but the opportunities this company is giving me can't be passed up. We're global and have locations everywhere so I could transfer within the company to another division in another city. Yeah, it sucks in Toledo but I'll make my sacrifices sooner than later.

Yeah I could up and move now and give this opportunity up but I can't imagine a degree would hurt me in the future. I could transfer now but then I'd have to spend another 2 years learning the new job and not having time to go to get that degree. Get the degree then leave. 2-3 years of school and I can get out. I'll be 29 by that time, have my townhouse paid down to where I can safely sell or even turn it into that rental property.

We have to give print outs and explain our Cisco configs to the auditors randomly. But that would also be blatant violation whereas I could just change the web monitoring program to not view my computer.. then again, that would be blatant violation.
