Okay heres the thing, i plan on building a computer soon. Something good, but can upgrade later (so i dont have to spend an arm and a leg NOW) but i dont have a damn clue about sockets, right now im using one of the shittiest computers known by man (eMachines T3418) with a 754 socket motherboard. Thx. Sorry for posting this, im sure someones asked this a thousand times, i just cant seem to the right post...

um, so what do you want, an AMD or intel cpu? if amd the socket AM2 is what you want to get, if intel then you want a socket 775 mobo. you could also get a socket 939 mobo if you choose amd, but those are being phased out. socket 775 is really your only choice right now when it comes to intel procs, unless you want to build a xeon server or something, then you need to get socket 771.

so...theres no difference, other than the compatability of the motherboard and cpu...I plan on building a core 2 duo with a nice motherboard, something than can run 4gb ddr2, possibly good for OC'ing.

P.S- i've seen motherboards that can run 8GB-16GB ram is that really necessary, or were they server mobo's? thx. again...

besides the differences in chipsets and options, there basiclly all the same.

any mobo should be able to handle 4gb of ram, you might want to get the 64bit edition of windows though, that way the 4gb can be fully utilized. any board that supports 16gb of ram is probably a server or workstation board.

whats your budget for the mobo? and what kind of C2D are you going to get? you can get some really good OC-ing boards in the $160-ish range, but you can get top of the line for about $250.

read these two articles, they should give you some idea of what you want.

For the mobo i plan to spend $150-$250, and for C2D...probably a e6600, and since my budget isnt all that high i'll probably throw in a stick of 512MB RAM (ddr2 of course) something cheap to hold me off until i can atleast buy 2GB RAM.

I have been Looking at the NVIDIA nForce 680i SLI ATX Intel Motherboard, which i dont mind paying the $259.00, but do you know any other mobos that are better or cheaper (around the same performance)
