I baught a new computer in february for my gaming needs. I am now thinking of upping its power slightly. Im 16 still in school with no real source of income so all thats left is for me to sponge off my mum.

I baught an XFX 7800GT 256mb and it was fine. But now I want more fps... so I am going to get SLI cards. What I was wondering was, do I need to buy the exact XFX 7800GT 256mb card or can I buy one with the same specs from a different manufacturer and will it still run the same?

Small question but I just want to make sure.

Another thing I have seen is the 7800GS that nvidia slipt out that will turbocache to 512mb. I have been comparing the cards and I could get 2x 7100GS for about £70 then sell my current 7800GT for about the same but will I benefit from the SLI 7100GS cards?

I have an AMD 3700+ 2.31Ghz OC/d CPU with 2GB RAM and an ASUS SLI Deluxe mobo.

The only problem is, the 7100GS specs seem to be lower, i.e the pixel pipeline ius only 4 while 7800GT has 20 and the memory interface is only 64 bit while the 7800GT is 256 bit =/

I know this is long but could i get some tips? Can I run 2 different manufacture 7800GT cards in SLI? or is it worthwhile getting 2x 7100GS in SLI?

Thanks =>

I am not sure about whether you can match two different manufacturers together (though I doubt it) but regarding your other question, 7100s SLIed together would be terrible. Absolutely awful. Coming down to that from 7800GT would make a grown man cry.

Well put >_< ok so 7100GS is out of the question I guess. Would 7100GS SLI be better than a 6800GT? My friend was also thinking about it.

I really need to know if I can SLI an XFX 7800GT with, say, a BFG 7800GT if the specs are the same because I am finding it really hard to find another XFX 7800GT =<

I have heard that an identical chip but different manufac. will still sli. SO if you just get another 7800gt 256mb with identical clock speeds. supposdly if you get one with a slower mem. clock that your current then both card will run at the lower mem. clock i.e. 1@1.4ghz + 1@1.3ghz=2@1.3ghz etc

Stay away from the 7100, simple. you would be making a very very very bad choice.

Works perfectly fine to SLI two different manufacturers cards of the same model. You don't have to worry about clocking your higher card to the lower speeds, it will do that automatically.

As the others said, the 7100 is basically as good as onboard video and sucks bigtime. You may want to look in the VGA charts here at toms and around the net to decide if SLI will actually help in the games you play the most. Some games it helps very much, but some it does not.

Which games do you play the most and which do you plan on playing? What size monitor do you have and what resolutions do you play your games at?

Try investing in 2 gigs of high quality, low latency ram. It will benefit you more.

If you read my post and my sig you would see i alread have 2GBs of top quality RAM and my CPU is good so my gfx card is what I want to upgrade next.

Thats great to hear thankyou =D

I play COD2, WoW, BF2142 and Dark Messiah but I want it specificly for FPS games because thats where it counts for me.

DUDE, AN AGP CARD WILL NOT WORK ON AN SLI SYSTEM !..... SLI IS PCE-E INTERFACE............... AGP WILL NOT WORK ON IT.

7800GS IS AN AGP CARD.

your caps button is right below tab, if you struggle with that then look for the button with 'Caps Lock'.. even that doesnt have as many caps as what you just used.

And read it again please >_< my card is a 7800GT, not once did I say it was a 7800GS.

Remember, caps lock is your friend.

I would look at benches to see how much SLi will benefit your BF2142 play and Dark Messiah. WoW is probably already on max settings on a single 7800GT so you will see no improvement except being able to run at a higher resolution if you wanted to.

Why 350+ posts and still using ALL CAPS TO SAY SOMETHING USELESS? Some may never learn...
