Why would anyone buy a top-end system now that can't do DX10?
What are they thinking?
Maybe they're counting on people who don't know what they're buying getting it by accident...
I'm dissapointed that there's no mention of it as a downside in the article either...

Well there is one guy who have benchmarked dual 8800GTX-es, overclocked, water cooled, combined with an Intel Core2Quad, also overclocked to hell... 23000 points in 3DMark2k6, 41000 points in 2k5.

It smokes this expensive systems by a long shot...

Too bad I didn't save the link on that benchmark, but it shouldn't be very hard to find.

I know it's been posted about, but that commercial with k|ngp|n benching with LN2 and 8800GTXs is pretty sweet. YouTube has it and it is somewhere on Nvidia's website.

Once again, it took too long for a toms article to get published on their site, making the article (mostly) useless. Too bad, would have been interesting a couple of months ago.

Have to agree with what everybody else is saying here. Quad SLI with quad core sounds good, but dual 8800GTX with quad core is so much better.

THG needs to get its hands on a pair of 8800GTX cards and a kentsfield and do some OCing.

BTW: those scores by k|ngp|n are stellar!!! 8O Gotta see some FPS on that 30 inch...

People did a good job of pointing out that the quad core 7950 is blown away by the same configuration with 8800's.

However, the point of this review seemed to be comparing SLI to CrossFire. The ATI X1900 is close to top of the line for ATI, and performs that way in CrossFire as well. But the 7950GX2 only slightly outperforms the 7950GTX alone, while the 7900GTX outperforms the 7950GX2 in SLI by quite a margin. The 7950GX2 is clocked down in both memory and core because of heat issues. A pair of 7950GTX's would beat it by even more in SLI. Had the system used either the 7900GTX or 7950GTX, the SLI and CrossFire scores would have been almost identical.

I realize that TG can only review the hardware which is sent to them. Its just not a very good comparison between SLI and CrossFire and shouldn't have been presented as such IMO. Why anyone would build a system with a couple of 7950GX2's in SLI is beyond me, when they could get better performance for less $ with 2 X 7900GTX's. :)
