I agree. The easiest way to get help is to post a build; explain what the pc usage is (which you have done)- and go from there.

I think C2D is definitely that way to go; and from there the 6600 seems the best value for money purchase. For gpu, you face a decision over dx10 / dx9 (if you want the latest, there of only one dx10- nvidia 8800); so some would agrue it would be better to wait for ati's offering to compare.

With a C2D, you are looking at two possible mobos types; 965 & 975x. Opinion is split; so read around to get some different opinions. Your hdtv questions have also been covered loads elsewhere (try searching); my only question is why you need that soundcard (given that most good mobos will carry good channel sound, like this ASUS P5W DH DELUXE which has 8 channel sound). You can always buy and install the sound card after if you are not satisfied.

I would recommend reading this article to help you get started. Then post a build and you'll get lots of advice.

If you want someone just to tell you what to buy- then look at the other build posts and use one of their build's.

Meh... too lazy to analyze all the parts, might come back later to do so, but read this article about HDCP graphics cards and it might give you an idea about what you want to watch movies on...

http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2874

Video decode acceleration on NVIDIA GPUs is handled by the PureVideo processor, which is tied directly to the core clock speed, so the CPU utilization of each card will reflect this. The end result is that an NVIDIA card with more pipelines that is better at 3D performance will not necessarily be better at video decoding. With ATI, its AVIVO decoding is also tied to the processing power of the card, but is not quite as related to the clock speed as it is with NVIDIA. We also found that there was a bit of variance between multiple runs of the same tests, but these tests give us a general view of the CPU utilization of each of these cards.

We can see that the X1900 XT 256 gets a very low average CPU utilization compared to the other cards. Also, the 8800 GTX and 8800 GTS offloaded more processing from the CPU than the other NVIDIA cards, which isn't very surprising given that NVIDIA mentioned that the PureVideo core is a bit faster in G80. For reference, we measured the CPU utilization of the Blu-Ray playback benchmark with hardware acceleration disabled, and we got an average of 51.0%, giving us an idea of how much work these graphics cards take off the CPU. The Gigabyte 7600 GS doesn't seem to help in this area at all, and it makes sense when we consider that it's the slowest clocked NVIDIA card of the group. It would appear that a 400MHz clock speed doesn't provide enough power with PureVideo to make a difference in CPU utilization.

Even taking into account these results, CPU utilization isn't going to make a big difference between which of these cards would be better choices than others. Until we can look at H.264 and VC1 decode performance we will have to focus on other important factors to consider such as power, heat and noise.

That's probably the most important one, but you should skim the article at least.

You'd like the Z5500's. I have the Z5300's and they're THX certified 5.1's. Unless you plan on actually putting speakers behind you, (which can be tricky when you're using a computer setup and not your living room tv) then go with 5.1 speakers. The extra 2 speakers might jack up your price and may not be required. I guess it depends how much of an audiophile you are. Also, you're going to get a slight buzz with ANY sub, mine I can't hear unless I crank it up and put my head up closer to it. Turn the volume settings up on your computer before you turn up your power output on your speakers. That helps to reduce static noise. Also, good sound is user-defined. Some people prefer treble to bass, so expect to tinker with your settings too if you're looking for top quality sound. Try onboard sound too before buying a sound card to see if it serves your purpose. Onboard sound (in my opinion) sounds pretty good, but will probably be clearer with a sound card. Still, top Creative sound cards run $200 or so, and there are other brands out there you should consider. Read reviews, do your research and understand what you're spending your money on, even if you have plenty of it.

I'm also a fan of Samsung Monitors... I own the 215tw and the 204B, but there are newer models out now. Get a nice widescreen with 8ms response or faster for gaming. I might even say 6ms or faster now. Good video cards should be able to adjust resolution to standard on-the-fly if your game doesn't support widescreen (most non-new games).

Here's a good place to start if you want to see some Samsung monitors. I think they're great quality and uber-sexi. I prefer mine without speakers as it sometimes brings the cost down a bit, and the small speakers sound far too tinny. Extra's like component jacks on the side that I can plug a gaming console into are nice too.

Oh, and my center speaker fits nicely right on the stand under my monitor. My whole computer matches with black/silver/blue. It looks really sexy. :p

Blue LED's in a Thermaltake Kandalf Case
Logitech G15 gaming keyboard
Razer Copperhead Mouse - Blue lit
Samsung 215tw monitor
Logitech THX Z5300's
Black leather chair from Meijer $60. :p

Everything matches beautifully and even the mouse is tops.
