Installed Mcafee's new utility program and one of its options was to change windows start up screen to another bmp. System is win 98 2nd ed.
Upon doing this and re booting the process stalls and shows a c:\ prompt. Now I have to type in (win) to continue boot up. Have uninstalled the program but still having problem. Have checked autoexec.exe, ect and cannot find the prompt. Any Ideas.
thanks

Your best way to fix this is to take of the read only on MSDOS.SYS ( off the root of the CD drive ) and make sure the top part of the file reads like:[Paths]

WinDir=C:\WINDOWS
WinBootDir=C:\WINDOWS
HostWinBootDrv=C

And the other section that says [Options] has a line:

BootGUI=1

An excellent answer was given by Jobe. Just to a single plifying thing, in case some new users wanted to know about this:

You cannot simply edit the file msdos.sys. You will have to remove the read-only attribute either by using Windows Explorer (and then the "Properties" of the file), or by typing the following in the C:\ directory: ATTRIB -R MSDOS.SYS

After making the changes, it is recommended that you again set the read-only attribute by typing ATTRIB +R MSDOS.SYS

who cares about read only. Use good old norton :)
in fact i was thinking if the option logo=1 in msdos.sys will solve this. Maybe the problem it's the logo, dunno.
