Another CPU Upgrade Question

Have a question about upgrading my CPU. Here is my system...

Pentium 4 640 @ 3.8ghz
ASUS P5LD2 Deluxe
2gb DDR2-533
Cooler Master 450w PSU
Sapphire X1950PRO
2 Seagate 80gb 7200 RAID 0

I only use the system for gaming but am thinking about a CPU upgrade. Since my MB will not support a C2D, will I see any gains with a Pentium D 945? Or, should I just wait until I have the money to buy a new MB?

I know the C2D will stomp on the 945, but a new MB is not in the picture right now...

Eh, if you're doing primarily gaming, I would wait. Probably until the newer versions of Conroe come out, with their respective mobo's, mid-07 or so. You're rig specs seem fine enough...

Agreed. The only problem with your system is that you lack a dual core CPU. You have the fastest (clocked) single core CPU Intel made. The cores on the dual core CPUs aren't clocked as fast, and in single core "mode" (like most games) will be slower then what you have now. Unless you spend a lot of time right now doing several things at once, like like playing Prey and burning a DVD, just stick with what you have.

I think the best way to increase the performance is to overclock more.
