Ok, I have set my monitors refresh rate to 75Hz in windows via display properties, but in my games when I turn on vsync it caps my frame rates at 60 not at 75 like I think it should.

I like vsync to prevent screen tearing but I would like to have a little higher frame rate. I think my crt (a 19" flat screen viewsonic don't know exact model #) can go to 120Hz, so I know 75 isn't pushing it at all. I just want to know why vsync is still capped at 60 when my monitor should allow 75. Do I need to set the refresh rate of the monitor in a different manner or what?

At what resolution can it do 120hrz. Windows normaly defaults it at 60hrz but 120hrz is normaly the lowest resolution the monitor can handle. When you get closer to its max it comes down to 70 or 60 hrz.

I think it can do 120hz @ 1024x768 maybe its 800x600, and I I think it does 70Hz at its max res 1600x1200. I also thought of this and I have always played games at 800x600, so 75Hz at 800x600 should be no problem.

Your right it shouldnt be a problem. Do you have to unhide settings this monitor doesnt support? there should be some kind of software to set the refresh. I think i use what comes with the omega drivers. Since i dont really bother to get into that software much someone else will ahve to help you with that. I dont suppose your using a nvidia with windows xp? I remember back in the day there were alot of complaints about the two together and refresh bugs.

nope I have an ati x700pro. But you did make me think of something, I do run my desktop at 1600x1200 and I am trying to set it to 75Hz which I do believe it cant do. that maybe my problem, windows may just kick it down to the default 60Hz when it cant do the 75hz at 1600x1200.

Ill set my desktop to a lower res then set the refresh rate to 75 and see if that does it.

This problem is nothing to do with Vsynk it is only a simple problem to do with you not setting refresh override in your drivers display options. Go to ATi control panel then look through the menu’s till you see refresh override. Once you have found it set it to 75Hz and your monitor will then play all games in 75Hz at any resolution (avoid using resolutions that cant run at 75Hz) instead of windows default at 60Hz.

A little side not as you don’t seem to know too much about graphics. If you’re setting Vsynk to on then you have to be aware that if at any point your GFX card cannot produce 75FPS in full it will automatically throttle your FPS to 50% of your maximum refresh rate. E.g. 37.5FPS, you should really use 80Hz as that is a more round figure for Vsynk.

You can however circumvent this issue by enabling a feature in the drivers settings called triple buffering. This will send a constant stream of say 80FPS to the monitor just like standard Vsynk. But if at any point your GFX card cannot produce 80FPS, then instead of throttling down your FPS to 50% of max it will instead freeze any frame that overlaps the timeframe of 12.5 milliseconds in to the next frame space thus giving you a constant stream of 80 complete frames per second. NOTE: you must still enable Vsynk when triple buffering is enabled.

Although triple buffering stops your frames being reduced by half every time your GFX card encounters a time when it cant produce the max FPS which is very noticeable and annoying. It is still not a perfect way to do things, as it does not give you the most accurate image that can be delivered since single frames can be spread over 2 or more frames at random and it does actually decrease performance a fair bit compared to not having any Vsynk features enabled.

Choice is yours.

thanks for the information, I do know that vsync will kill my fps 50% if it cant keep up but I only turn it on in games that my pc can kill like ut2004 no point in putting out 150 to 200 fps 75 80 is fine.

I do one on one matches with one shot one kill just to keep my reflexes sharp and a screen tear just messes me up.
