I am seriously thinking of upgrading my AMD 2500 to something more robust. I am NOT an overclocker and not really a gamer, but I like to have on-board graphics. What would be better for me: AMD x2 3800 w/GF 6150/430 or Intel Conroe E6300 w/Intel GX 3000? The cpu price difference from AMD to Intel is $33 while the mobo difference is also 34 for the Intel mobo or $54 for the Asus P5B-vm. Is it worth the additional money? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks

Specify the full configurations(mainboard model & RAM) which you are comparing and their prices.
The E6300 is faster than the X2 3800 by 15% in average. There are very cheap mainboards for C2 as much as for K8.

Go with the Intel. Better performance, lower power consumption, no odd compatability issues, cheaper.

Lower power consumption? Lower than what? Previous Intel processors? Well, yeah... that's not difficult... but AMD has plenty of low power CPUs out so I'm not sure that's a valid reason.

Umm... odd compatibility issues? Maybe 15 years ago... but since then AMD has made perfectly compatible CPUs and their motherboards are on the same level as their Intel counterparts... again, not a good argument.

Performance and price... yeah, THAT is why someone should consider Intel CPUs. However... he said he's not a gamer... and I think the X2 would be perfectly adequate and the ideal processor considering the lower price point... do you really think you'll notice that C2D when running MS Paint? Yes, the C2D is better... I just don't think it's the best solution for this guy.

The AMD based rig with the 6150 will be your better bet. Intels IGP's are, well, crap. :) Even if you're not a gamer you may want to try the occasional game and the nvidia based IGP will perform better. CPU wise the E6300 is the better processor, but as stated above, I don't really think you'll notice the difference.

Better still......use a calculater with a printer attached and some pencils and paper. It' cheap, it won't crash and no windows!!! 8) :p
