My old computer finally died (caught on fire actually) so I need to build another. It's been about 3 years since I've built a system so I'm kind of out of date with the new stuff and need some help. What do you think?

Here's the breakdown of the system
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium Socket 939 MB $133.99

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ CPU $247.99

OCZ Platinum 2GB PC3200 RAM $299.99

SeaSonic 600W PSU $144.99

2 eVGA GeForce 6800XT SLI GPU's $238

WD Raptor 10k RPM 150 GB HD $224.99

Zalman Cooler $53.99

Total Cost is $1348.93

I want a system that is quiet and fast. I'm also worried about compatiblity.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Completely agree, don't buy discontinued technology, there is no upgrade path.

Don't SLI old low end cards, one new card will beat them, even a single 7900gt will beat both those cards in SLI.

OCZ ram is fine if you want it, just get DDR2-6400.

Yelling cracked me up actually. Told you I was out of date w/the new stuff :D . Thanks for the heads up. How important is the 10k rpm drive? Can I just use my old 250 gig WD 7200 ide? Any suggestions for AMD CPU/MB's?

Yuh, Prozac and Waylander have pretty much nailed it with the socket 939 and 6800XT thing.

And, as if it's really neccessary, I completely and wholeheartedly agree with them.

My addition to their sterling advice would maybe be to drop the Raptor in favour of perhaps a better GPU or CPU? It'll make more of a difference. Just a thought.

I agree with the hdd to an extent, if you still want the raptor (it is slightly faster) then get the 75gb one and use it only for OS and programs, plug your old ide drive in as a data drive.

Yes if you do buy the Raptor and have a little extra cash to spend it will be well worth the investment.

I have duel 150GB Raptor's in RAID 0 and...man I don't think I could ever go back to 7200RPM in desktop :P.

Good luck. :D

OK so after reading everyones suggestions (thanks) here's what I'm thinking. What do you think? Suggestions please especially w/ MB, processor, GPU, RAM.

Gigabyte GA-M59SLI-S5 MB - $169.99

Athlon 64 X2 5000+ 2.6GHz AM2 CPU - $319.99

Radeon X1950 GPU - $199.99

Corsair XMS2 2GB - $300

New build cost - $1369.94
Everything else I kept the same as original post. Thanks.

Go with Core2Duo. AMD was the king, but no longer.

If you are comfortable with overclocking, an E6300 C2D will SPANK the AMD, and for alot less money.

Even without an OC, hardpressed to justify the price-to-performance of the AMD.

I'm no fanboy btw, I've owned both AMD and Intel over the years. C2D is where it's at for the next while. By the time you get around to your next upgrade, AMD might regain the crown. But not yet.
