Today I've been asked if you'd get a performance increase on a computer if you put in a graphics card. But this is a company laptop, so it won't see any gaming. What I want to know is if there would be an increase in performance for tasks such as compiling, load times, and the like. And what would be that increase, in % ? It would be neat if anyone could come up with a recommendation for a graphics card.

It is not possible to add in an additional graphics card to a laptop. What is already built into it is all you get.

But to answer your questions, no a different graphics card will not increase compiling, or application load times, system boot times, or anything else like that. The only things a better graphics card will get you is the ability to run games, cad programs, and have all of the windows xp graphical niceties that rely on DirectX8 turned on without hesistation or stuttering.

the answer is quite simple :

1) it is a laptop, so you can't add a graphics card

2) a better graphics card provides better performance in games, and only in games. It doesn't change anything for compiling or load times.

Laptops are not made to be upgraded. Generally, all you can do to speed up a laptop is adding RAM.
