Using double the materials, or a die shrink, you can get +30% to +42% more performance using the same power consumption (assuming reduction in power by half here, to run two cores).

The whole PC industry is built on this fundamental fact.

Just recently consumers are seeing multi-GPU / multi-core, SMT, processor, socket machines.

Running 2 chips (2 cores within 1 chip) at about 71% (vs original performance) uses the same power as one chip at 100% the original performance. This works for 3,4,5,6+ cores / chips too, it just needs more materials and more interconnects* (eventually interconnects between chips becomes a problem). *(Die shrinks help here over time obviously).
