At stock speed (2.4ghz) the core temps are around 63C using intel hsf. At overclock to 3.0ghz running prime95 the core temps rise to 82C! Is this too hot??
What is the typical temp a stock e6600 with intel hsf run at? What is a good upgrade hsf that is AT LEAST as quiet as the intel unit? Thanks.
The stock HSF is fine. Its kind of tricky to get the little plastic clips in right. I believe if you re-seat the heatsink you have, you'll be fine. There are printed instructions in the box. You will need to replace the thermal paste, though.
surane says Core Temp is correct, and it's widely reported on several message boards that Core Temp is the only accurate temp monitor. Unfortunately, I have to disagree.
I also have an E6600 on a Asus P5W-DH. Core Temp reads about 8-10 degrees higher than all other utilities. Right now, it's 77F in my room, so my readings are about 8C above normal, but you get the idea.
PC Probe II - 49.0 C
SpeedFan 4.28 - 48.0 C
SciSoft Sandra - 48.5 C
(All three within 1 degree)
Core Temp - 64.0 C
(15-16 degrees above the others)
I realize Core Temp uses a different method of getting the temp, but I think the other three would be the standard Intel refers to in setting the safe temp limits. I don't see Core Temp as being more accurate, just giving a different type of reading.
I would say (going by the three that agree) that 38C is a good temp. If you can get down to 30C, 45C with Core Temp, you're not overclocked enough. 50C is getting on the hot side, but not enough to be scary. 65C is the point to get worried. Naturally, add 15C if you are using Core Temp.
I'm not worried about my temps, and you probably shouldn't be either. Your CPU might only last 5 years instead of ten.
core temp uses sensor built into the cpu itself. the rest of the temp monitors approximates the cpu temp through an sensor near the cpu die and an algorthm. So technically speaking. intel TAT and core temp r accurate. BUT, i think when intel put out their specs they r going by the approximated temps and not core temp.
