Hey, i don't know how much the X1950 PRO Goes for in the states but you should be able to get it below 200. They are Kick ass cards, i have one atm. It should run vista with out any problems. So try to get your hands on one of those.

I would still recommend the 7600GT because it's current generation (well, technically last *cough* 8800 *cough*). Not completely sure but I think the 7600GT will consume less power than the 850 Pro. It will do as well or better than the 850 in nearly every benchmark, despite the higher mem bandwidth.

that card is 128-bit :?

Here
is a great card for $140, it's got HDTV and s-video

Here is a good power supply for the price
You will have to ask some other people about the rails though, I don't know much about power supplies

the 76gt is sm3.0 the other isnt. and the 128 mem doesnt make a difference.

It's not 128 mem, it's 128 bit interface...you will notice a performance decrease between 128 and 256 bit interface cards

He didn't say anything about shader 3.0 or w/e

i dont notice anydifference and i have a68gt w/256 and a76gt w/128.

as far as sm3.0 the x8## doesnt have that and if he wants to play
newer games (slpintercell). well the x8## cards wont play it at all.

The 7600GT would be the exception to that rule. It's high core speed and architecture more than make up for it's crippled 128MB interface.

You know, if you guys would have scrolled down just a little farther, there are much more capable cards for around the same price.

Check these two out:

eVGA 7900GS
GeCube Radeon X1800GTO

Both available for right around $150 with shipping.

This Thermaltake power supply seems like the best deal at or around $70. Gives you the 500W you were looking for. Please, PLEASE, don't buy the Atrix. I've had nothing but problems out of that brand.

Hope this was of some help.

True, true. Wasn't adressing that comment specifically to you, but I had to reply to someone... :)

You are right on with your assessment though. The 7600GT hangs in quite well with the X850, in most tests. Both good cards for the money, previously. But with the heavy discounts coming into effect on former high-end parts, there are just much better cards now available for nearly the same price.

Works out great for us hardware freaks. :)

gotta bag ya on this one chief.the interface makes huge difference,as it is the bandwidth bus so to speak.

In most cases yes, except when comparing the X850pro and the 7600GT, which is what I think he meant.

I was suprised how well the 7600GT perfromed when it first came out. Same price range, same pipe count, x850pro 256mb interface, 7600GT 128mb, and close to the same performance, with a slight edge going to the 7600GT. The high core speeds and newer architecture make up for the 128mb interface. 8)

I would really go for the 7900gs. it's the perfect choice for what you're looking .i had my hands on a couple of them , (1 from asus and about 6-7 from leadtek) and i would recomend leadtek.the asus board had a lower quality image and the leadtek board scored a few points more in 3dmark even when working with the asus drivers  and btw the X850 boards are not the choice.they have more raw power but are lacking support for new tech and also require a more powerfull psu. i guess for the 7900gs and the x2 you have a 450-480 W psu is enough.also the 7600gt is a good choice but only if you just don't have the money to cover the few extra bucks for the 7900gs.the lacking 256bit interface is very well replaced by the high memory frequencies specialy in the 7600GT"extreme" version but still the 7900gs has a lot more to offer with only a small diffrence in price.

Good luck on the new build come spring-time. And you're right, it's sad that there isn't more trickle-down effect into new AGP boards. I know, I know, AGP is dead. Thing is, the 8x AGP bandwidth spec still is not maxed out, even with the last generation of cards. I wonder if it's lack of demand, or lack of engineering on the part of the board builders. Hmm.
