Does anyone know of an easy way to extract the recordings from Pocket PC
notes files? The problem I have is that the memory on my device gets
full very quickly and I want to delete some notes, but I'd also like to
keep an archive on my hard disk for reference. Obviously, since
ActiveSync is synching the files, if I delete the notes file on my
device then ActiveSync will also delete the corresponding copy in
Outlook on the PC; which is annoying and a very stupid way of doing things.

Ideally I'd like to archive them in a sound format such as WAVE (or even
better, a superb sound format like OGG, but I appreciate that's not
likely...) so that I can play them as needed.

I realise that Microsoft, in its efforts at world domination, tries to
lock people into proprietary formats and tries wherever possible to
force users into using their software; but in this case it's really
impinging on sensible use.

If it's not possible to do what I want (and knowing Microsoft I'm not
holding my breath here) then could anyone recommend alternative software
for taking notes and recording conversations?

Try other recorders.
NoteM - free but has poor functionality.
Vito SoundExplorer - not free but much better and more flexible.

Forgot to say.
They will record to MP3 so you will have better quality and more
space(especially if you do it into flash card)

Thanks, I will look into your recommendations.

Take a look at http://BevHoward.com/bhhpj.htm#Record for a complete
description of what's going on with the default recorder, options for
use and methods to extract previously embedded recordings.

Many thanks for that informative link, Beverly. I had already thought
along the same lines as Jud Hardcastle, but although Jud says it's easy
to do, it still takes time and effort and I don't want to use Word. And
using a Hex editor is a lot of messing about for something that should
be simple.

This, I think, exemplifies Microsoft's contempt for its customers. They
are so desperate to keep you locked in to their products that they make
you jump through ridiculous hoops just to get at your OWN data. I was
intensely irritated when I found that under ActiveSync's Sync Options
the Settings option for Notes produced NO settings, but rather a dialog
box that said, "No settings are required for Notes synchronization...".
Oh really? Hey, Microsoft: what about an option that you could tick,
saying something like, "Convert Recordings to WAVs"?

So, would anyone in this group be interested in a utility that
automatically converts the audio part of notes to archivable sound
files? I'd like to know whether there'd be any interest in it.

The easiest approach is to set notes to save recorder files as wav files
rather than embedding them within notes. think it's tools/options/stay in...

Even though the files are "synced" as outlook objects, they can be
copied to the pc directly as wav files.

Easier yet is to configure so that the recordings are stored on a memory
card, then simply plug the card into a card reader on the pc and access
them directly for use or conversion to another format.
tools/options/default/storage(if available) (Note that this precludes
new notes being synced)

An "extractor" is needed only in the case that a valuable recording has
already been made as an embedded object and needs to be retrieved...
since a lower and lower percentage of PC's can't access the recording,
an extractor would be nice, but would be concerned for you that it would
not have a wide audience.
