Ok, this is what I have, I have dsl and a P4 1.6ghz with 1gb of ram running xp home, dvdrw and dvdrom on computer 1 and OLD 233mghz AMD running win 98, with a newly installed 10-100 card by netgear on computer 2. I am trying to setup a network hardwired to the old computer and wireless to the HA HA newer computer through a netgear 614 router with a netgear wg311 wireless pci card. I tried to do this and have failed miserably on both computers trying first on the older computer and then the newer one. I followed installation instructions and still no dice. I set it up wired first on the newer computer and have not tried wireless as it said that I have to hook it up wired first. I would appreciate all the help I can get. I am just trying to do a little upgrading of old computers. I really think I need a step by step procedure to do this. I am not completely helpless but was told that all I had to do on the xp computer was plug it in and follow the directions and it would run. Not so so far. :(

Ok.. you gave us an excessive amount of useless information.

You're trying to network 2 computers together basically?

One is running Windows 98.
What is the other computer running?

In order to do this, you're going to want to purchase a router. A router will connect the 2 computers via ethernet cables. Your cable/DSL will plug into the router's selected port and give you internet acces - that is, if you have broadband.

It's basically that simple aside from setting up Windows 98 with the proper protocols and enabling file/printer sharing to see each other.

Post back more info:

What OSs are you using
do you have a switch or router?

Ok, I have a win 98 that will be hardwired and a win xp that is wireless.
I am using a Netgear router 614 v6
On the xp computer I am using a wg311 netgear wireless card
On the 98 computer I am using a fa 311 ethernet card

I contacted the support line today and they got me hooked up with the wireless win xp computer but could not get me connected to the win 98 computer. It pinged ip address fine but would not ping yahoo.com. It kept coming back unknown host. They said that it was not binding properly whatever that means.

So I am needing help with the hardwired win 98 computer.

I am sorry about all the info but on other forums I always get asked for all the info about my computers.

What IP addresses are the 2 machines using? Are u using DHCP?
Did you try accessing the win98 comp for the winxp one? And vise-versa ?

I don't know the address for the 98 because it crashed. It says: A required dll.file C:windowssystemmsvcrt was not found, and then it says that I must reinstall window. Well I tried getting the dll off the win98 disc but it would not recognize the cd drive. I don't know how to fix this at all.
I am not sure of the ip address until I get it started. The address for the other xp computer is 198.162.10.3 and it is dhcp. I have not been able to see the other computer from either one.

Gotta luv MS :D

I am not familiar with that router u r using but from your post what I gather is/are the following:

1. DHCP is setup on the router
2. XP comp gets IP address through wireless and is able to access the net
3. 98 computer is connected to same router by cat5 cable and is not able to access the net

There are a few things that you could do:

1. Try reinstalling win98
2. check cable by connecting the xp computer using it. (BTW crossover cable in your case is a big no-no)
3. Once u get the win98 comp running try to c if they can connect to each other through the local net. If the DHCP is working correctly it should have an IP address of 192.168.10.x (where x is a number from 0 - 254 excluding 3 and whatever address that you router uses)

Good luck :)

Actually right before the 98 computer crashed it had recognized the network and had accessed the internet! I was updating windows when it crashed. I can't get it to recognize the cd drive at startup so reinstalling is not working.

So now instead of a network prob you have a hardware prob ? :(

What exactly do you mean when you say you cannot get it to recognize the CD drive?

Is it not showing in the BIOS or you cannot get the CD to boot from it ?

When trying to boot from floppy I cannot get it to rcognize the drive to transfer the file off of the win 98 disc. It just keeps going to the type help prompt.

Did you try booting off the CD instead of using the floppy? It's in the BIOS settings.

If you are trying to boot off a floopy what type of startup floppy r u using? plain dos, win95 win98 winme ????

I have the cd in the drive but it will not start up to it. I am using my win 98 startup floppy. How do you get in the bios and set it to start from the cd?

Reply to shags72

When the PC is booting press the DEL key. It should show after the memory post something like “press DEL for BIOS settings”

BTW what error message are you getting when you try accessing the CD from the startup disk?

I don't really get an error messeage I just see it say something like drive not recognized as it does diagnostics. Then it just keeps going to the help screen, when I am booting from the win 98 floppy.

Hmmmmmmm……………… Could be that the generic drivers don’t support your CD. (Haven’t seen that happening before)
Try using one of the following startup disks.

Any luck booting from CD? I think is your best chance.
