well i have the 3700 have had it for over a year.

have oc,ed it to 2730mhz on air and no vlt bump.

if you played a game with both the 3700 and 4000 you would not
see any difference.

the 3700 is 2.2 stock the 4000 is 2.4 stock, everything else
is the same.

oh silly 4000...... it is the same damn core but clocked slightly higher... same core mind you... if you picked up a 4000 and a 3700 and OC'd them both on the very same board the 4000 may go further, the 3700 may go further... it depends on the revision of the core and oh, i dont know, the bloody weather on the day it was made

if you want to know which of the 2, i say 3700 because uhhhh its cheaper... if you want to be smart about it... check the stepping of both the chips... pick the best stepping... there are certain sandys that will go beyond 3ghz at stock voltage AND on air... but there are some that crap out a little past 2.6 no matter how much juice you feed them.

:)

Don't know much about server CPUs sorry...... I do know however that I OC'd my 3700+ to 2.61GHz on stock cooler with no voltage increase and it went like something off a shovel. Got an extra 10 FPS in doom and 15 FPS in BF2!

Opterons are better overclockers as the are designed for servers therefore are more stable. I have heard of ppl getting that 146 to 2.9ghz on that DFI Ultra-D motherboard you have chosen but mainly come in around 2.7ghz.

I'd say at the same clock speed that both cpu's would be close, but the opteron might just be able to o'c that little bit more.

What price can you find the 4000 for? i can only see it at around £90. Since the Opteron 146 is only £60 on that SCAN link you posted then i would choose it instead.

btw is this better then both of them ? http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=289426

not really better but yes those opty,s are very good and good at
overclocking.

the 3700,4000 or the opty should work just fine.

so all you have to do is decide which one you want.

goodluck and happy gaming.

You've contradicted yourself. On stock, yes it is not better but it does have better oc potential plus it is around £25 cheaper.

Good luck with the overclocking and if you have any trouble don't forget to come back so we can (hopefully) help you.

isnt the opty148 2.0 stock. if so then an oc to 2.2 would put it
at the 3700 level and 200mhz should be easy.

he should be able to 2.4 easy with the opty, which would put it at the 4000
level.

and he should still be able to 2.6 with the opty pretty easy.
especially with the dfi and the memory he listed.

i would also say that 2.8 should be a good possiability.
