I have a lack of cash, a college student, and have planned out a good plan on how to build a new pc in two parts.

I have a 6800GT AGP 256mb card that is sorta what is holding me back. What I mean is if it was a PCi-e card i would be buying my PCi-e Motherboard right now.

Anyway heres the chip, and AGP mboard:

Intel Core 2 Duo E6400 Conroe 2.13GHz LGA 775 Processor Model BX80557E6400
Model #: BX80557E6400
Item #: N82E16819115004

$263.49 -$5.00 Combo
$258.49

PC CHIPS P23G (V3.0) Socket T (LGA 775) VIA P4M800 PRO Micro ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail
Model #: P23G (V3.0)
Item #: N82E16813185086

))))_______________________((((

with a temporary stick of single channel ram:

CORSAIR ValueSelect 512MB 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) System Memory Model VS512MB400 - Retail
Model #: VS512MB400
Item #: N82E16820145026

$54.99 -$10.00 Instant
$44.99

Total(before tax): $303.48 = not a bad price considering its a 260 dollar Proc AND Mboard bundle, and the other 2 are just place holders.

So my plan is to get a Proc and Ram, with a AGP board, while using my decent Vid card i have now. This way when i get more money I will get a DX10 card with a new MB and great RAM.

This makes sense right???

AND can I get by with my decent Vantec 350W PS? Its never given me trouble with a AMD 2500+ 6800GT, 3 HDs, and really id only be adding in a Core 2 Duo, in place of the AMD. When i get the new card obviously id get a juicy PS.

Maybe it's just me but i couldn't grasp the concept your your trying to convey, anyway i don't think that 350 is gonna cut it, maybe so, maybe not...

Stay away from PC Chips. They have a horrible history of poorly made boards. You would be better off with MSI.

Why Corair RAM? If you aren't going to seriously or 1/2 seriusly OC your system, you can get away with more generic memory and save money.

Check to make sure your PSU has the appropriate number of pins for the mobo connector - 24 as compared to the older 20 pin.

Other than that, I think you have chosen a fairly good route for upgrading.

Decent plan, but as stated by another poster....steer clear of PCChips. Get the ASRock 775Dual-VSTA...better quality, tons of possible configurations...and can be overclocked to ~300MHz FSB(not sure the PCChips will even allow any O/Cing). Stick with your PSU...it's about 50/50 that it will be sufficient, if it's in good shape...if not-then grab a new PSU ~450-480w. GL :)

cool, so in short what im planning on doing is buying half the stuff now, then when i can get a new Gfx board ill spring for that and better ram, and of course things like a better PS and maybe a fast HD.

I forgot about those PCIe and AGP boards, and thanks to all those who told me about PC Chips. Now anyone wanna wager if these prices will go up by the time Vista ships?

If anything, they will go down, most likely in a marginal sense.

The market may want to push those boards the manufacturers mark "Vista Ready" onto early adopters, so those other, lower end boards should lose demand.
