I have recently had a bit of trouble with my pc. It works fine until I try to play games like World of Warcraft and Neverwinter Nights 2. Both games crash randomly and the problem has been getting worse and worse. I used to get maybe one or two crashes a day, and now it is at the point that I can play Neverwinter Nights 2 for a little while but then when I try to move to a different zone the game crashes.

After a crash my computer restarts and on the top of the screen it says something along the lines of X1900XT Bios and asks for my motherboard cd.

I tried updating my drivers for the card and then tried uninstalling them completely and installing the drivers that came with my videocard. My last ATI card (a Radeon 9800 Pro) also broke forcing me to buy a new videocard along with a new motherboard and cpu.

What steps can I take to figure out where the problem is?

As I said before the problem only seems to occur when I try to play a game, although my original Counter-Strike is working without any problems.

Power supply? Other parts?

Could be Windows itself.

I have a 500 watt power supply and have had no problems with that in the past 6 months. I got a new hard drive 2 weeks ago, and the problems started soon after that. It may also be a windows error since I had some weird messages popping up from time to time about corrupt windows files.

Tried to format and reinstall windows but no luck. Now it is saying that there is a corrupt file and that it cannot read from the cd. I tried installing from another windows cd and the same thing occured. I then booted my old windows and tried installing a game and at around 95% it also said it had a problem reading from the cd. I have no idea what is going on now since now the problem is also affecting my cd-rom drive.

So I have gone from crashing on games running from the hard drive, to random crashes with errors saying some windows files are corrupted and the system has recovered from a serious error, to the computer having trouble installing things from the dvd drive. Could a virus affect a computer like this?

I see no other choice but to take the computer to the store unless I can find a way to format my c drive from outside windows therefore wiping my old hard drive.

if you have tried multiple windows xp cds and all give the same error it is most likely your cd-rom drive. dig out an old 32x cd-rom reader and use that. it should be fine. post some specifics about your rig so that we can better diagonse what else could be the problem.

Yep tried using a different hard drive and cd-rom drive. I took it to the store a few days ago and the guy said it is probably corrupt memory. I have 4 x 512 MB ram, they are the same speed but 2 of them are one brand and 2 are another. So it is either a problem with the motherboard or the memory, I will know tomorrow probably when they fix it.

probably not a good idea to use 4 sticks of 512.... that puts too much stress on the CPU's memory controller.... its either a hit or miss with that... i have one DFI board that cant take the 4 sticks while another asus board that can take it.. so yea... best idea is to just stick with 2x512.. or upgrade to 2x1024... thats your best bet. either that or one of your DIMM slots crapped out on you
