Hey guys, I built a computer from scratch for the first time a few weeks ago, the only thing I left out was speakers and a sound card (ordered an X Fi sound card now).

For speakers I want something decent, or hopefully very good. These were my choices:

Which of these two would you recommend? I like the idea of 5.1, but I prefer quality (a clearer, less boomy bass if that makes any sense). Would the 2.1 suit me well? I do like to blast my music when no one is around, or if I have friends over, and I like to watch movies with the volume up.

That 5.1 klipsch is 350 dollars, which is very expensive for me, and I am not really an audiophile but I do like listening to music and watching movies, and I would like to have some nice quality. Also, the coolness factor is through the roof, even though there would be limited opportunities to actually blast it (neighbors, and perhaps the health of my inner ear, it seems like it would be pretty loud). I look at it like buying some turbo sports car even though you arent allowed to drive over 150 miles per hour most of the time, still nice to look at and KNOW that you could if you wanted to.

What would you guys suggest?

Newegg shipping sucks these days. If it's clarity you want, maybe you should invest in a higher-end non-pc sound system. A pair of bookshelfs and a reciever/amp, maybe?

I basically live at my desk, and I still manage with a pair of bookshelf speakers. But if you're that set on buying pc speakers, I'm afraid I can't offer much more than a "In my opinion, Klipsch is the best". I have hardly any experience with higher end PC speakers. Only a selective amount of DJ equipment, 2 pairs of headphones, 1 set of $100 pc speakers and my bookshelf speakers.

Yeah, I have no real need for bookshelf speakers since:
a) all my music is downloaded on my computer
b) I want nice speakers for FPS games and such
c) I watch all of my movies on the computer

Anyone have any opinions on:

Klipsch 2.1 Promedia

Or Logitech Z-5500

Klipsch seem a bit plain but in a classy sort of way, and the logitech looks more modern, and would probably provide a better "wow" factor when I had friends over or something.

How would the 2.1 do with games and movies? Is it worth the extra 150 bucks for the Logitech for the sheer power and coolness factor? The Klipsch happen to be on sale atm, with free shipping, so that is another benefit. I think in the end I would like the logitech because it seems more powerful and fun, but the price of the klipsch, possible better quality, etc is holding me back.

What would you guys do?

Have you considered getting a very nice set of headphones instead? Its what I use when I'm gaming and I have never heard any computer speakers that came come close to highend or true dj headphones.

I may pick up a pair of Sennheiser headphones just to use at night, but that wouldnt really help with movies and music. My brother and cousin's computers are in the same room and I like to control the entertainment. We watch all of the movies and music together, using my computer.

Not to mention, a pair of headphones doesn't really help if I have friends over or something and want to listen to music =P

Klipsch can hang in there occasionally with some of the lower end bookshelf providers. For pure output levels I'd argue the Klipsch out of the ones you chose. Go with a 5.1 Klipsch setup if you want to game, unless you already have some headphones for gaming. Positional audio is important (IMO) if you want to stand a chance against people that try hard.

My bookshelves do very well as far as volume levels are concerned. It's definitely something worth checking out if you're willing to spend $260 on a set of PC speakers. Despite having lower quality audio sources, the extra clarity and response would still be there. Seriously consider it. Then again, you could not consider it. I tend to have a no-holds-barred approach when it comes to things I purchase. The bookshelves will probably last longer than a set of PC speakers, so the price you pay over time should remain about equal, if not lower for a good audio setup. And you'll get better quality sound for the duration....even if you think your music is low quality. Just my two cents. After hearing the difference...its either bookshelves...or high quality headphones.
