Hi, I wanted to upgrade from my prescott to a core2 but I didn't have much money so i just bought a mobo/ram/proc/video card. I was planning on using my current case/psu/hard drive/etc... Bought an e6400, 7900GS, 680i mobo, and supertalent memory. However I was a total n00b and didn't realize that my current power supply is a 20 pin power supply. I know that there are 20-24 pin convertor cables. My current power supply says it is an Apevia (Aspire) ATX-AS500W although I think more specifically it is an Apevia (Aspire) ATX-AS500W-SV, altough I'm not positive since it doesn't say on the power supply.

Two questions:

A) Will a 20 to 24 pin convertor cables work with any 20 pin power supply?

B) Will a 20 to 24 pin convertor cable work with my 20 pin ATX-Apevia (Aspire) AS500W/ATX-AS500W-SV PSU?

Tried googleing it but I couldn't find much. One site said that a PSU may or may not be compatible. Another site was selling the ATX-AS500W-SV power supply with a 20-24 pin convertor. It looks like it will work, just wanted to check with all of you experts first.

Thanks!

I plan on getting an TT Armor case and a TT Tough Power PSU as soon as I can save up a little money.

Upgrading from a prescott/6800GT, was getting less than 20FPS at some parts of FEAR on med-low settings. :(

I see (kindof).

Is the main reason why you said that I don't need the connector because I only have 1 +12V rail, or because I have lots of Amps?

Hope I'm not bugging you, just trying to learn!

How long have you had that unit?

I had one running my fileserver 24x7 just shy of a 400w max draw (P4 2.4 northwood/Tyan Trinity S2099GNN/Aspire X-Navigator w/ ATX-AS500W/2x512mb transcend DDR266 CL2/11xIDE hdds 80gb~400gb/1xdvdrw/1xpci sound/2xpci ide raid) it ran great for about 18 months until one day I powered down to swap out the DVDRW and on powerup it stayed on for about 30 seconds and after that shut down after 5 seconds then would not turn on at all

I had to pull my PCP&C 510w out of my game rig and all was well, found a deal on a Antec TPII-480 for $62 shipped for the game rig :D

edit - I recall it ran pretty hot as well and the fan speed was low, I bypassed the fan rheostat for a direct 12v on the 80mm fans - it helped slightly but still ran a bit warmer than I liked...

Had it for about two and a half years. Think the fan controller in the PSU has a short in it though, it goes from very loud to no airflow with no in between. I had to keep it on very loud with my prescott.

Just got my computer up and running and it works just fine with the 20 pin plugged into the 24 pin. More than doubled my FPS in FEARXP! So much cooler and quieter now too! Thanks MP!
