Will I have a bottleneck??

Hi all,

I'm considering getting the x1950pro (AGP) to extend my current systems life a bit longer, but am concerned that my CPU could cause a bottleneck.

Here's my current set-up:
Athlon64 3200+ @ 2.2Ghz
Gigabyte K8NS Pro mobo (Skt 754)
1 Gig Kingston Super-ram (2x512 sticks)
Xpertvision 256mb X800XL
120 Gig Seagate HDD
500 watt PSU

Will this be enough CPU power for the X1950 to stretch its wings (so to speak) or should I just stick with what I've got?

Any advice greatly appreciated. :)

No the CPU will not be a bottleneck for you. I'm more concerned about the PSU. What brand is it and how many amps are on the +12v rail(s)?

Can't see what brand it is, but the info on the side of the PSU says that the +12V rail is supplying 18A (amps).

Not all 500W PSU's can supply the 24A of power needed on the +12v rails.

Neither does my Enermax Liberty 620W PSU, but yet it works just fine w/ my 8800 GTX. Which, may I remind you, has 2 seperate 12V PCI-E connections. My Enermax only supplies 22A per 12V PCI-E output.

I seriously doubt the x1950pro requires more than 12A. And even if it did, it's running off the AGP bus power which runs off the motheboard power. 99% of all 500W power supplies supply more than 12A on the motherboard rail/output. So it's a non-issue.

500W is plenty. Now stop scaring the dude and let him buy his x1950pro.

Thanks for the topic supernoob, I think I should just ask my question in this topic instead of making another redundant one.

I have a
slot 754 Athlon 3000+ at 2.0 ghz
1 GB memory
Radeon x800xl
Thermaltake Silent Purepower 420W

Will I be able to use a x1950 pro without problems? I am considering upgrading since I can probably sell my x800xl to a friend for around $100.

P.S. Would my friend's Pentium 4 2.8ghz cpu work with a x800xl?

No your processor is fine and as for your PSU,no probs there either.Look at my specs at the bottom and you'll see what I mean.I onle have a 520watt PSU but my system is power hungry and I've never had a prob with it.Goodluck.

Upgrading your cpu will certainly increase your overall performance, but a powerful graphics card wont be held back by a decent processor, imo there is no such thing as bottlenecks if your system can run the hardware. You'll be better off than you were to before getting the part so go for it.

There's no quick and easy single answer to your question. It depends greatly upon what games you intend to run. If you run software which is primarily GPU bound, then the answer is no. If you run software that is heavily CPU bound, then the answer is yes. You have to qualify your question.

Have you seen the new Sapphire x1950pro AGP? It has two molex connectors on the back of the card because the AGP slot doesn't supply as much power as the PCIe slot does. I have no idea how many amps an x1950pro requires, but if it takes two molex connectors to power it I'm sure its a lot. Either way taking a look at the powersupply now can save some issues later.

2 molex connectors usually=1 pci express connector(6pin)

basically just look on your 12volt rail and see how many amps your getting.
i have a 500watt aspire w/ blue lighted fan.

i have a 38a on my 12v and its great.

i could technically run a 8800gts on it if i wanted to, but thats gonna be in my new build
