Hello,

I decided I wanted to overlclock my rig

CPU : Amd 3800+ x2 (AM2)
Ram : 1 gig Kingston DDR2 533mhz
Mobo : Asus M2N-E

I know my ram is slow, and I was wondering what would be the best aproach to overclocking this rig

Thank you! :)

Hi Deardeath,
Hey that memory is perfect for Intel Core2 CPU rigs. Nothing wrong with it, but you will see most AM2 rigs running PC2-6400 memory at 400MHz (800DDR).
What you will find is that pushing your HyperTransport 'FSB' beyond 200MHz to overclock will also increase your memory speed beyond 266MHz (533DDR) it is rated for.
Normally, with a heavy overclock you can adjust to a lower divider so your memory will remain within spec - but you are already at the lowest divider supported by the M2N-E to begin with.
So, loosen your memory timings completely (to default/SPD) and begin to increase your HT speed, and see how your memory responds - you may be pleasantly surprised to find your memory will run okay at ~300MHz (600DDR) although it is unlikely to do the 667DDR of the next-rated memory which is PC2-5400.
A generous DDR2 memory voltage of at least 2.0V will help to aid you in your noble quest,
Regards
