i was hoping someone could help me out, i trying to use my tv as a primary monitor using a s-video and fx5200 but all im coming up with is 800x600 resolution and 8 bit colors. btw these are the only settings the computers are detecting. Is there something else i should be doing?? any help is appreciated
Hate to say it but my advice would be to buy a cheap ATI graphics card, they always seem to be more stable and easy to use when it comes to multiple monitors or using tvs as monitors. Though to be honest, unless its a HDTV then you wont be able to read any text above about 640x480 so any higher resolutions will be not much use. In either case, you should definitely be able to get higher than 8bit colour, you poor man! any ideas folks?
TVs work poorly as a monitor, unless its an HDTV over DVI or component (though, in practice, DVI is much much more common and can be converted to HDMI which is more common on HDTVs).
They don't even work well to watch movies on, unless its HDTV again.
Is XP your OS? 800x600 with low colors sounds like the default video drivers built into XP. If this is the case, your card isn't being picked up correctly. Try reinstalling the drivers to see if you can change it. I have my TV hooked up to my x1800xt with Svideo, and it works fine.
Whoever said you only get 640x480 is wrong because I can select a wide range of resolutions. (I keep it at 1024x768, the same size as my 17" monitor.) BTW, I don't have an HDTV.
The other big question the is What os are you using?
What is the make/model # of your tv?
Make sure you have the newest drivers. In linux use the one nVidia makes not the packaged one.
In both windows and linux you may need to setup your own custom settings. THe information of how to do this is out there, but if you do, double check against your tvs specks or you could ruin it.
As suggested I would recommend 640x480 for a SD tv. You will need to play with it to find what works best for your tv.
