Well I am thinking of buying a new graphics card to play CoH tomorrow, yeah that is the only game I'm going to be playing. Basically, I'd like to play at the max settings. My budget is of 250-270 (no more). So yeah I looked on newegg and zipzoomfly and found the X1950XT 256MB, which is supposed to perform a little better than the X1900 XT, at $260. However, I have heard and read that the 256MB won't allow me to play at Ultra textures? I am trying the demo with my 800XL and can run it at 1280x1024 everything on the max settings, except Textures (High) and Shadows (Medium), getting a 25 FPS average on the Performance Test. If I try Ultra textures it will crash after it's done loading ..
So, is 512MB a must to play with the Ultra Textures option? If it is, please help me find a video card which is as good as it or even better at the same price range? 7900GT?GTO?. I can play Doom 3 with ultra, and although it tells me that I need 500MB VRAM it works and I get decent frames per second.
At 1280 x 1024 I am pretty sure the x1950xt will handle any settings you throw at it in CoH. My 7800GT runs it just dandy at that resolution with max settings.
Trust me .. it WILL play at Ulta Textures and beyond ...
X1950XT uses a highly clocked DDR4 memory .. it's fast clockspeeds enable it to perform and store large texture processes ..
for example .. on a 7800GTX 256MB ..you can play Ghost Recon 3 (G.R.A.W. ) at High textures .. even though the game clearly confirms the need for a 512MB texture memory for that process !
don't worry about that .. that card can handle any thing you throw at it !
hi check my hardware below , i can play CoH on all max on that resolution quite fine, with minimal little slowdowns during multiple explosions and a mass of units
Hey, I am thinking about getting an X1950 XT 256MB as well to replace my x800 Pro that is having issues.
Good Luck with the card
I have an X1950XT and I CAN run CoH on ultra, but it has some problems. This is mainly due to the rest of my system (1gb ram) I think though, and I haven't tried running ultra without 2D clock speed and with overclocking settings
I have the same machine as you pretty much, just an X850 instead of the X800.
It plays on high with about 30 FPS. You can't really tell the diffence between "High" and "Ultra" in stategy games anyway, because you only see it when you zoom way, way in.
Oh yeah, by the way: that game sucks. The computer is impossibly hard on easy. I'm not a slouch and have lots of strategy experience but I get asskicked everytime I play it. Empires at War is the current strategy game I like, because it is perfectly balanced (not the expansion).
But good luck with CoH. It is a HOT game these days and has great graphics and units.

takes some practice, but coh does not suck ass. im handling expert computers at this point, its all about not turtling.
oh, well yeah. but i meant just holding your territory together, because thats the most common fundamental mistake. rushing is really prevented anyway because every base starts with 2 machine gun platforms.
i bet youre a starcraft ling rusher ;p
coh is not so bard the first 2 games i admit i lost, but then after i got used to the game i just win on the hard medium, and gard lvl(but its tough thou) and medieval 2 is a nice game also, the multiplayer is fun u pick ur army and just battle out
How would the X1950xt handle the game @ 1600x1200? I have the same video card as the OP, along with 2gb ram, and a different mobo. My system handles anything 1280x1024 and below like a champ.
I'm really torn between getting this card, spending another $150 for an 8800gts, or just waiting it out.
And another concern I have is my power supply only dishes out 18A on the 12v rail. It would appear that this card and the 8800 drink lots of amps, so that's another $100+ for a power supply. Grrrr.

If you have the money, go for the GTS. If not, the X1950XT can't be touched for the price. Also, put a good cooling solution on it, and the X1950XT is an overclocking beast.
By the way, ATiTool reports that the card doesn't draw more than 8.2A on overclocked settings and heightened voltages.
It would probably deal fine at 1600x1200, and you could always just overclock XTX.
