I was with AT&T a year ago and thought their GSM service in the Bay area and
San Diego was good. (I switched to Verizon for other reasons). When my
current contract is up, I'm thinking of switching to Cingular, and wanted to
know peoples opinion of Cingular service vs. AT&T?
I had a VERY bad experience a while back with cingular overloading their
network in California and basicly not ever being able to use my phone when I
wanted to. So I'm a little concerned going back to them.
I'm specifically interested about service in San Diego. Do you get many
dropped calls? How about system busies?
One thing I loved about Cingular when I had them a long time ago, was their
up to the minute call logging. I could get on their website and see a phone
call I just got finished making 5 minutes before. Is this still possible?
Thanks!

Now that Cingular has merged with ATTWS, either carrier has the advantage of
both networks.

John,
Thanks for the response. Unfortunately the same is true for the
disadvantages.
Maybe I wasn't clear in my first post. I want to know both the good and the
bad of Cingular, specifically in San Diego, then California, then the whole
USA.
Examples would be dropped calls or system busy signals, how well their
webpage works, the detail and accuracy of the information found on it, etc.
Thanks!

I use Cingular in San Diego and I'm very satisfied. I have very few
dropped calls and I'm happy. My dad lives in Oceanside, I work in the UTC
area, my brothers live in La Jolla and Lakeside and I have no problem
traveling around the county. Service is fine in stores such as Home Depot,
Fry's Electronics, Ikea and Costco around SD City and County.
The rollover minutes allowed me to start with lots of minutes in the
beginning then switch to a lower-minute calling plan. Now, I never worry
about going over my minutes, I don't have to watch the clock and I talk
whenever i want. I'm really happy with rollover.
Since AT&T and Cingular merged, my anytime minute usage has decreased
because mobile-to-mobile also applies AT&T customers.
I like the fast-forward feature to forward your mobile phone calls to your
home or work. The cost is $2.99 or free if you're an SBC combined bill
customer. But if you use combined billing, you don't get Cingular web page
access to manage your account.
The web account management has all the necessary information. You can
download your bill, pay online, etc.. The online account management will
show you your most recent calls but the information is no updated
immediately. It takes at least a few hours and sometimes days.

Richie,
Thanks for the review. That is exactly what I was looking for.
Do you find many dead spots around town? For example, do you get a dropped
call when driving along the 52 freeway into Santee? I know Verizon and
Nextel drop calls there almost everytime.
Thanks!

John,
If this newsgroup is not to talk about Cingular and peoples
concerns/information/experiences about Cingular, what is it for?
If you don't want to answer my question that perfectly fine, but I don't
believe your smart ass remarks help this newsgroup. In fact they are
probably as damaging as spammers, if not worse.

Better, but not as good as it may be is the best answer.

A totally misleading statement.
In some areas integration is not complete.
In some areas you may need a new 64K SIM card in your phone.
In Some Areas (Charlotte, N.C.) Cingular had to sell off
ATTWS (to Suncom).
You will need a miltiband GSM phone.

That's what it's for, but Google should be used first to check Internet
resources and access back posts of this group before asking questions over
again, according to Usenet guidelines.

Please read the thread I started. "I wish I hadn't done
it...(Migrate)" I migrated my AT&T Wireless GSM account to Cingular 8
days ago and have had NOTHING but trouble since. Instantly upon
migrating, service in my 4th floor condo went from 5 bars to 1 or 2,
at best. I'm dropping calls all the damn time, including here in Los
Angeles and a couple of days ago in New York. With AT&T I would drop
only ONE or TWO per month, at most. Clearly, not everyone gets the
advantages of BOTH networks as Sr. Navas would have you believe.
Why are you leaving Verizon? I was thinking of moving my business to
them.

I've driven the 52 into Santee several times. But I don't remember if i was
using my phone then. I've driven Scripps Poway Parkway into Lakeside and I
do remember making calls. That area is kinda hilly so you'd think that
there would be problems with dropped calls. It was fine.
I'm always on the phone while driving in San Diego and my experience is that
Cingular works as well or better then any other provider. Cingular is the
cheapest. To me, a call is a call, and I'll always select the least cost
provider so long as the service is good. So far, I'm not disappointed with
Cingular.

Halogen, you probably had problems right after SBC purchased Pacbell
Mobile Services. Coverage really was not the problem it was not
growing the network and being too congested. I have been a customer
since PBMS first launched in San Diego and since T-Mobile signed
network sharing agreements, Cingular/T-Mobile have dramatically built
out the network. Cingular alone is on par with the other carriers and
slightly trailing Verizon. This is because they run an 850 network
that has the original towers that were built in the 80's. With AT&T's
850 network, Verizon no longer has that advantage. Any dead spots
should be filled in with AT&T's towers. Rollover and cost is another
Cingular advantage. My bill is the same every month with 4 phones on
the plan..

Actually you do, just not as you expect, as you would know if you'd taken the
time to read my posts more carefully:
Cingular subscribers with standard handsets only roam on ATTWS when
there is no usable Cingular signal even when the ATTWS signal is much
better, and vice versa. Until the two networks are truly merged,
which will undoubtedly take some time, this issue can only be
overcome with a Cingular-branded handset and new SIM that support
ENS, which addresses this issue by combining the two physical
networks into one virtual network.

Thats true, I was on when they switched from pacbell to cingular. I used
them down here, and a bit up in the bay area and had problems.
I'm still a little hesitant to try them again, but I dont see any better
options. Obviously I can't stay with verizon if I'm getting this many
dropped calls. I prefer GSM, so that limits me to T-mobile or Cingular.
Cingular is bigger than T-mobile so I think they are my best bet.

Depends if you use Native towers or roaming.
Using Native towers I've seen it be less than an hour behind, roaming
(like in New York City)( aka Cingular Extended for FREE on National
plan), I've seen it be days behind.
