Was this that much of a dumb question? I just wanted to price compare AMD equivalents before the jump back to Intel...

It wasnt a dumb question, u just got some dumb replies like most topics in this forum do.

I argued this once before with another forum member, it really depends on what you plan to do with your computer.

Tom's CPU Charts - usually the best place to start.

I would compare it to a x2 4200/4400, but sometimes it beats the x2 5000 so it is hard to compare.

Is this just a general question or are you deciding what to buy?

You would have to estimate/extrapolate to find what the e6300 compares to, as it isn't mentioned in the CPU charts...

I assume you plan on buying one of the comparable CPUs or the e6300 itself, just reminding you to factor in overclocking if you plan to do so!

In my opinion the AMD Equivalent of the E6300 would be the 4400+ with some good Dual Channel 1 GB's at DDR800 O/B
( i was only being stupid for that looser) Not your post

The 1.86 GHz 2MB E6300 generally performs about as well as an X2 4200+ does. It does a tad better in games than the 4200+ does, and worse in scientific/math apps that do not use SSE2/3 heavily. The 4200+ and E6300 are about the same price and performance, so I'd look at other things (such as available motherboards, chipsets) to see which one to get.

I do hope you were not referring to me.

Thanks for all the Info, Folks. Pretty well a general comparison question.

AM DEFINITELY BUYING E6300 or E6400. First Intel CPU for a LONG
TIME...

Still working on mb/ram match for cpu.Mobo don't need all the bells and whistles(like SLI,firewire), just a good overclocker with audio, sata2, usb2.0,network, and hopefully latest chipset!

This will be the foundation of my gaming system, with CPU upgrade at a later date.

Might I suggest then a P965 chipset motherboard like the Abit AB9? It's $125, it can hit 400MHz + FSB clock speeds (420-45o from what I hear,) and I've had good luck with Abit boards. The board also has a silent heatpipe chipset cooler, which is a good thing.

I've never had an abit board, they are a sub of asus now, aren't they?
And yes, I was going for the 965 chipset. Gigabyte and Asus are other options...I'll check a review on that board u recommended...

Actually, Abit got bought out by USI and are officially called Universal Abit. ASUS and Gigabyte are the ones together now IIRC. ASRock is probably who you were thinking of as they are ASUS's budget brand that makes boards with unusual combinations of features (like a Core 2 Duo board with an AGP slot and DDR 400 interface.)

I see. Someone mentioned Asrock in an earlier poll, I got it mixed up with Abit wqjudiqwbi

I'd say the Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 is about the equiv of a Athlon 64 X2, at 2.4 - 2.6 GHz, 2 x 512 KB L2 cache, on a Socket AM2 platform (Dual Channel DDR2-800) that is damn well configured. - Depending on the task at hand.

Bear in mind for the difference in price one may be able to get slightly better video card (eg: pre-overclocked, with factory warranty on that overclock) and/or better RAM with tight timings. To go with that Core 2 Duo E6300 (unless mainboards differ in prices heaps).
Although DDR2-800 at 4-4-4-12 timings helps an Athlon 64 more than it helps the Core 2 Duo. :p
For Core 2 Duo E6300 I'd be looking at the Gigabyte GA-965P-S3 or GA-965P-DS3

Don't suppose they have a motherboard for conroe, pcie x16 and old ddr memory?
I'd like to upgrade to conroe instead of opteron, but don't want to buy new memory
