Will there ever be a day when our pc's reach a level of the ultimate in technology/sound/graphics that there will be nowhere else to go?

With few exceptions (i.e. games, video editing, engineering programs) what can a computer do today that it couldn't do several years ago? What can the latest Office suite do that you can't do with Office 2000 on a Pentium 4? You can still browse the internet on machines 3-4 generations ago.

When will we have the types of graphics on our PC's like the Pixar animated films? What's after that? Graphics that look like real life? We're pretty close to that now.

What's the computer of 2015 going to be like?

Will it reach a level where there is no where to go?

So long as man exist, man will innovate.

I can imagine once we understand how our brains works, and are able to process data, I wouldn't be surprised if they were to develop a chip that worked on the same level. The biggest hurdle I see will be the process used to produce the chips. We soon will be using basically a computer that makes calculations based on rays of light..(lasers)

Our PC's are already capable of producing hollywood quality graphics (let me clarify: who remembers the first Final Fantasy Movie? The Spirits Within?). And we are not far off from rendering in real time this level of quality and detail.

With the new 4 core processor systems of today, the proper developing team, code optimization, and graphics processor utilization (sorry people, we the developers need direct access to the number crunching capabilities of the GPU's), these are a very real possibility.

Its up to the developers now, not the CPU Engineers.

I believe when games cannot improve and become more realistic, then hardware development will slow down big time.

I think gadgets, stuff like music players, cell phones etc., will continue to get better and smaller. They'll stop improving when we're implanting them into out head.

Nah, they are just going to introduce our brains to a firmware upgrade, no extra hardware needed!

That goes without saying. Someday we'll have portable games with ps3 power. My OP was only about PC's.

And I don't think we'll be implanting them in our own heads...that'd be dangerous.

There will never be a plateau unless somebody presses the big red button.
If we are still around in 10 years, many theoretical technologies will bear fruit and come into being. My first pc was an 8086 4.77mhz 10 mb hdd 2 5 1/4" floppies and good ol' CGA graphics! Seems like only yesterday...

Funny, that system was $2000 back then...

I remember when there were good PC games released every week...now it seems like a really good game only comes by once or twice a year...

Henry Ford also said there is no need to drive any faster than a horse can run, it will be too dangerous...

Pintail: I remember those days too, it was either I was younger and more easily pleased, or the development time didn't have to go into coding for the amazing graphics to make a game great...probably both!

And then they only take like 3 days to beat. Old games like zelda and mario 64 took me forever.

I guess the complexity of the games with all the eye candy has taken precidence over a good story...now that I think about it when was the last time I read a good book? Or any book? Anyone else notice THAT trend? :o

It seems to work for the movies, why not games?

quantum computing is the holy grail in speed.... All calculations are done instantly.... And officially about 3 months ago, someone invented the first silicone based quantum pc chip(link someone on this forum).... Will big brother ever let us have it is the question?
