See my 1st reply to this thread. Swap the AMD cpu and mobo for C2D. Should get you pretty close on your budget. If you haven't responded by Friday morning, I'll relink everything with the C2D setup to help you out.

Busy setting up my new rig!

The main purpose is everyday internet browsing and work for the 2 kids
not any gaming at all. maybe some dvd burning , a lady friend of mine went out on this past black friday and bought a compaq for 500 from wal mart thinking it was a great deal and now she is complaining at how slow it is. It has a celeron d single core proc 3.2, 533 mhz fsb, half a gig of ram and it sounds very pitiful. I informed her that she could probably do better if we built her a tower instead of getting that compaq.. any suggestions on some reliable parts to build with?

The main purpose is everyday browsing and for my friends 2 kids to work on their school work. They went out on black friday and bought a compaq presario with a celeron d 3.2 533 mhz fsb proc, it has half a gig of ram and they bought it at wal mart , that is all I know so far and she is already complaining about how slow it is. she spent close to 600 for it.

dude, thats the worst. my older brother did that, but a while back, got a similar system, and i was like, "come on, man! jeeze, i coulda gotten you more for less!"

oh well. as much as it sucks, y'know, you gotta deal. if an upgrade is in order, what will happen to their current system? and IS it for gaming? b/c games require more muscle than other apps, and that will dictate the strength of your build.

i would say though that a ~$600 build could work out... if you can transplant current components, perhaps like PSU, monitor, case, maybe even ram... these will save money and allow you to get a better build.

ASUS AM2 geforce 6150 barebone $145
AMD X2 3800+ $150
corsair 2x512 $124
Seagate 160GB HD $58
SAMSUNG DVD-RW $31
total $508

Since its not for games intergrated graphics are good enough. There is still room left to budget for a graphics card or the software

I too am in the middle of planning a budget build, only for gaming.. and my budget is 400 rofl.

I should be able to use my old optical drive, my seagate 80gb and hopefully my old case. That leaves proc/mobo/RAM/Video and Power.

so far.. the D805 overclocked looks super cheap and fast - I started a thread with my heat questions in CPU forum. Video looks like the 7600 GT or GS, so I can play latest games till dx10 becomes required for all...

Overclocked 805? *shudder*

That thing will suck up power like no tomorrow AND heat your whole house at the same time.

Do yourself a favor and pass on the 805. Get an X2 3800, or if you REALLY don't need dual core, just grab a 3500+, 1 gig cheap RAM, 7600GT and cheap mobo and there ya go!

pretty much, just without the oc-ing part, or with, thats even better. that configuration is pretty much the best you could put together right now for about $600

I've got to agree, see if they can return the old system. Build this new thing, overclock it at least a LITTLE, and let them be wowed.

If you wanna go cheap, get an antec case+ps in a package at newegg or chief value. They are a lot cheaper than separating the two, and you get a quality ps. If you don't do a lot of gaming with a strong graphics card, a 400W ps will be more than enough. Also, if you're only using it for internet, an integrated graphics will probably do ok.
