Anyone going to step out tonight to see if they can catch any sight of the attempted shooting down of the satellite?
In reading up on this.. its a huge weapons advancement if the US can knock it out with the first shot. Why?
The spy satellite is traveling at 24 times the speed of sound (24x750mph). China took out a weather satellite which travels exceptionally slow.
That's the big deal.. if we can hit something moving that fast, a ballistic missile should technically be easier, since it moves slower and close to the same size as the minivan sized satellite.
I'm figuring if it does get hit, over the next day or two anyone out west might see a nice shower in the sky.
I'll try and see if anything shows up but we're slated to have rainy/snow all day so cloud cover might suck. Too bad as I was hoping to check out the lunar eclipse as well.
ill try to get some of the pics of the eclipse over here posted, as it is clear as **** tonight out in the sand... [/shrug]
What shade of **** are you ****... crystal-clear from inhaling all that sand?
*...snort snort...*
yeah its sand i swear...
They could always set off a nuke...
Missile Hits Dying US Spy Satellite ... who knows if this is bullsh|t or not ...
Well if it's true, then I find it very impressive.
FEMA spokesman James McIntyre said. "These are purely precautionary and preparedness actions only," he said.
Fukc nuts didn't do "precautionary" **** for New Orleans, now, did they? Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but our government is always quick to act with something that concerns or benefits them, but not necessarily something that effects *just* its citizens.
Let the government hate thrive, if it dies we are all totally screwed.
N.O. was something different. It held through the storm but the levies failed later. Its not the government's problem to secure a city. It takes time to prepare for things.
The video of the satellite hitting is cool.. you can see the hot at a distance and the explosion. They've spent nearly a month planning for this.
So why are they doing so little to help rebuild the city? Why did it take them so long to get help there? Would it not be a good precuation to help prevent social deprivation?
As often as we've discussed the NO issue here ... (hint: search) - I'm still amazed that the same dumb questions keep popping up, time after time. It's almost like, if you keep asking them, they will suddenly become valid (although they've been thoroughly debated ad nauseam).
And no, I'm not going back to hunt down links for the lazy denizen that populate this place ...
1. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] leans-view
2. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/ [...] hem-bedlam
That's all I'm doing - just do the word search ... yw
wow, how do you go from shooting down sattelites to n.o.??
thats like seven degrees of retardedness...
:|
And yet the same dumb retarded replies still come back to haunt us. Both the posts you link were over 3 years ago and a good year before I joined THGC. In that time roughly fcuk all has happened to resolve the issues that the disaster exposed. It's not often that I can say the Brits are doing better at learning from mistakes but following our recent flooding issues you can see the changes that we have made to policy. You can see the difference in reaction of the emergency services and the hint of a commitment from Government to actually improve things.
Even RC commented in one of the linked threads at the delays in getting support into the city. Mac comments about the looting in part reply to your racialy questioning comments about the looters and points out the whole skew of wealth that you get in America.
The questions still stand, Jake. You may not like them but they are valid.
As for the shooting down thing.. Yeah, fcuking impressive shot.
What makes you think N.O. isn't being rebuilt?
Its come a long way and things have much improved.. the problem is how many people left that didn't come back.
N.O. has been in the news from time to time commenting on how well things have come along. Businesses are starting to hold their conferences there again and all that.
You don't see anyone complaining about it.. they're basically rebuilding an entire city from the ground up.
Show me a link stating that N.O. is struggling to rebuild.. I'm curious to see where you're getting your information; I believe it to be your biased personal judgement.
I think AV was referring to the various reported delays in the process;
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/6970736.stm
And as for your comment of "You don't see anyone complaining";
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_pictures/7154981.stm
Wait a minute fella...
You're going to link to a bunch of people complaining they don't want ruined houses torn down to be rebuilt.. ultimately slowing and/or stopping the public rebuilding process..
Then you're going to link to an article complaining about the slow and/or stopped rebuilding public houses and services?
Public services for example: water/gas/electric lines. Ok. Now, 4,500 houses in the first link want to be torn down and rebuilt due to extensive damage done to them. Does that possibly include damaged public services?
Condemned houses should not have gas/water/electric running into them.
The people there are their own worst enemies in my eyes.
Maybe they are their own worst enemies - but they are complaining and you can see them. I'm not saying that they're right - but their existence debunks your claim. And it only took me 30 seconds to find.
Let me clear up my statement.
The people I see complaining are the ones stopping themselves from being helped.
How does that sound?
I'm big enough to admit that I was just in a bad yesterday so sorry if I kicked this thread in a different direction but Boose made an interesting point and I wanted to comment.
Yes rebuilding is ongoing, although the process is taking a long time. That being said it was never going to happen over night. I was referring to the delays in getting support to the poor fcukers and the lack of commitment on the part of the city officials to securing the low land from a fairly foreseeable disaster.
I had read a little about some of the locals complaining about the level the land and start a fresh. Its an interesting situation. Here in the UK some time ago we had the fire at Windsor Castle. Straight after the fire it was announced that they would restore the damage to exactly how it was before the fire. Why? For hundreds of years new monarchs have employed the finest architects and designers to innovate and expand buildings. We presently have some fine British designers who could have innovated and enhanced an already great building. It seems, especially in the UK, that we are scared to amend or change.
Now the counter point. Here in Manchester we had a bit of a bang a few years back and took out quite a chunk of the city centre. The building work that followed was prolific. There are now many fine new buildings and I'm sure even Tom would concede some interesting stuff. One of the things the planners and designers have done is try to keep a tie to our Victorian heritage. New buildings sit side by side with old buildings. Many new buildings are structures created inside the shell of old buildings, mixing the classic lines with modern functionality.
Before we criticise those that are complaining in NO lets just have a thought for what they are trying to preserve. If you level a whole town then much of its character goes. Yes there will be some who are just plain unrealistic but some of them might actually be showing some foresight.
These are homes damaged from sitting in water for days, if not a week or more.
The French Quarters, which is the place everyone thinks of when they think of N.O. has been preserved. The rest of the homes should and need to be torn down and rebuilt. Yes, some historic houses without a doubt will be lost.. some will be preserved with some work. The problem is the people won't let the gov't come in, tear down the houses and rebuild them. The damage caused by the water will be too much to try to preserve that much.. the mold, the rotting, etc. Its not worth it.
What you speak of though is on a small scale compared to that of N.O. This is an entire city trying to be rebuilt.. it will take time. They're still rebuilding over in Asia after the tsunami. Caterpillar sent over hundreds of their machines and workers, free of charge and paying their workers, to clear and help rebuild. They've been there for years and they're still working.
I know a few people who moved down to N.O. to rebuild houses because the pay was that much higher. From time to time when I hear from him, he's putting in over 70 hours a week building new houses.
Its getting done.. unfortunately, you see some people complain in the paper and that is spread all over. But you don't see the other thousands of people who are happy... because frankly, that doesn't make headlines and it doesn't sell papers.
Can't these arseholes ever come up with something to do with technology aside from blowing other technology up?
When something else produces the excitement of blowing **** up, only then will the answer to your question be 'yes.'
*forwards bulk orders of cheap drugs to world governments*
Somebody mention cheap drugs?
*...mentions free drugs...*
I like those prices..
could use a blunt and a beer right now....
You are not the only one my sand encrusted comrade. I've blown the beer budget, the reserve beer budget and the smokes for tomorrow budget so I'm stuck here throwing poop for the evening.
That looked like a land lauched missile to me. I thought the most recent was sea based.
Came off a boat ... so says the Pentagon.
I've just looked at it again... it could be a boat but I'm not sure. Either way one hell of a moving target to try and track with a camera let alone the hitting something that far away with the missile.
The only people proud of hitting something far away are cowards.
***goes out to boozer and wonders who will bite at that***
Jake?
Not even close ...
***buys Jake a beer***
Now I am going back out, see you all later.

Fixed.
How much did you get for his watch?

Hey Rise, please tell me that you're not into satellites. Please.
"There was this one satellite -- I think they called it Sputnik -- and I was on the farm in rural Ohio looking up into the sky..." [/Rise reminiscing]
Rise is into pretty much everything but women.
How depressing.

Jef.
Mate.
You are right.
I count Mike as a close mate, but hey, I am disturbed by his recent outgoings.
Goes to a house party and gets cracked onto by a fake-canned tart who he says is an "8", but flatly refuses any form of contact because of the fear of STDs, or whatever that means. [/it was not like this in the 80s]
Is he gay? Is Mike going Brokeback on us? I mean, I dug the film and all, but hey, I pork women rough, raw and raunchy and I don't decline a night out with a tart, you know what I mean? You get your old girl on the rums and request anal, just like any other red-blooded man out there, Jef. But Mikey...I just don't know.
Mikey, Mikey, Mikey. What will become of him? Fantabulist on the Fab 5, maybe? The Buff Bronco from Ohio, eh?
Tom buying anything for someone else most likely means your wallet has been stolen and you're really buying.
