So I get paid tomorrow at the most incredulous and prestigious food chain EVA', Burger King, and last paycheck I camped out and bought a Wii, and now it feels wrong using my old old old old-skool-wooden-panneled-noisy television on such a beautific peice of hardware.

So I would like to purchase a TV tuner that I can plug my Wii up to, and get hopefully superior image quality(maybe even HD if it would help image quality), my budget is about $150 (i gotta still have christmas money! =P)

and also a Frys just opened near me, which is essentially a much better priced newegg.com but I can WALK IN and PURCHASE no shipping or handling expenses! So if possible I would like to purchase it there, frys.com is where to look. So could somebody please reccomend a worthy TV tuner for me!?!?! my specs should be on my signature!

Thank You!!! (any response is welcome!)

I know where you're coming from man, I tried to do the same thing with my Gamecube and it wasn't a pretty experience. First, I bought the ATI Elite Wonder PCI (ATI's MCE capable tv tuner that has an onboard MPEG2 encoder) and plugged in the GC; it was horrible with a 5-10 second lag. I thought the problem was the card's MPEG2 encoder that was delaying the signal (you know it having to be first encoded, then decoded) so I got the plain vanilla TV Wonder. The lag was reduced by about half, but it was still unplayable. Luckily I had a few old ATI All-in-Wonders laying around (the All-in-Wonder 128 & the All-in-Wonder 8500DV) and when I hooked up the GC to them, there was absolutely no lag. My theory is that since the graphics chip and tuner were on the same card (and on the AGP bus, compared to the PCI bus of the stand alone tuners) the signal was able to get between the two pretty quickly.

Granted I only tried ATI's tuners but I think you'll get a similar experience with other brands. There are other options though, the obvious one is get an All-in-Wonder, but the price will be steep and their latest one is based on the X1900. Another is to get an external tuner for your CRT, this tuner bypasses the computer completely and connects directly to your monitor. An example of such a tuner is the Kworld V-Stream Xpert LCD TV Box that can be found for about $65 (check Price Watch). It doesn't have component input though, only composite and s-video. Also, I haven't actually used the V-Stream so I don't know what the quality is like. Before doing any of that, check if your video card has VIVO (video in, video out); if it does you should be able to connect your Wii straight to the video card. You'll have to test the lag yourself though.

*EDIT* The V-Stream is available on NewEgg for $55., http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 1c3grabb3r
