Is there a way to disable ability to click on a Today screen item, such as
the owner info? Could help avoid accidental clicks... Who I am doesn't
change, so anytime I click to change owner info it's an accident!

Unless you need to see the owner info then why not simply remove it from
the Today menu?

Because hope springs eternal, so if the PDA gets lost, and found by
somebody, the finder will turn it on, see the owner info on the Today
screen and hurry to return the PocketPC to the owner. Hey, one can dream!

I have to wonder if in the coming years when you buy a ppc
if the owner information (name, address, phone number) will be
burned into the device such that it can't be changed.

The cell phone industry is alredy heading in this direction,
so that if you steal a cell phone you can't "clone" soemone elses
number and stea their service.

I have to wonder if in a few years you'll turn on your
ppc for the first time, enter your name, address, phone #, etc.
and it will be burned into ROM on a permanent basis. Who
knows what happens when you move to another address, etc.
but theft of cell phones, cloning, etc. are becoming huge problems and
cell phone manufaturers are starting to
figure out ways to combat the problem.

Maybe one of the ways that will end up being built into
every cell phone is when a cell phone is lost it will call
home.

In a few years, you'll have your device embedded into you.

Don't laugh.....there is a guy in England who invented a cell
phone that is imbedded into a tooth in your mouth. (I have
no idea how you dial out on the thing).

Also people (MIT especially) are creating "wearable" computers,

But then the kind person only sees your name, doesn't he/she. They might be
tempted to click on it and get your address, phone number and e-mail, making
it easier for them to return it.

The other option is to take it off the Today screen and turn on display user
info on start up. Adds a click to get you going, but gives that kind person
all the info they need right up front.

And phonenumber, no?

Personally, I find that too bothersome; and given the likeliness of a kind
person finding my PDA in the not very likely event that I'd lose it in
first place, I decided not to do that.

I take it to listen you have to unplug it and hold it to your ear?

Guess it does. Been so long since I've displayed that I forgot. I keep a
business card in the case. That way when the finder is done playing, and has
run the battery all the way down, they can still return it. ;)

That would be bad, since my phone # might change... and women getting
married would have a name change, too.

As the follow-ups indicated, I would like it if somebody found it that they
would contact me to return it. It displays my cell phone # in addition to
my name, which is the best way to contact me and tell me I left it on my
table at the restaurant. Or, even if you live in a rathole of thieves where
people would keep lost valuables (New York City?), at least your friends
would return it to you if you left it at their house.

Password protecting it, to answer another post, wouldn't work - I'm trying
to avoid the annoyance of accidental 'clicking', not necessarily protect it
from having someone change owner info. (They could just hard-reset it and
override that, anyway)

There's gotta be a registry tweak, if nothing else, to change the 'click'
behavior of Today screen items...

But if someone can change the name, etc. in theory they could
also change the name so that it looks like *****their****
device, could steal your phone number, phone hours,
and potentially your entire identity.

The idea for the cell phone industry is how do you
combat stuff like Cell Phone cloning. That may mean
for a woman who gets married and changes her name that
she may have to get a new phone. Same thing if you move.

Other wise if you can change your name/phone number/
etc. on your device than so can a crook who
wants to steal a few thousand of your cell phone hours.

Maybe the day will come when you buy your cell phone
service and tie your phone to a fingerprint so
that only you can use it.

Yes it is inconvenient to not be able to change your
name/etc. on the phone but it's also inconventient
to get your cell phone bill and find that somone
stole a few thousand hours of your service.

I know someone who had their phone stolen, he just
got a bill for $7,000 that the crook ran up on his
phone.

People will find ways around non-permanent security features. I don't
know about the US but in the UK some of the mobile/cell phones you buy
are locked to a particular network. It is easy to unlock them- there
are web sites that do it cheaply (a quick search showed £3 ~$5), and
there are market stalls that even do it for you while you wait.

Each mobile phone has an unique IMIE (serial) number and the phone can
be disabled by giving this number to the appropriate authority over
here. All that users need to be is aware of this and keep a record of
that serial number. Is that facility not available over there? All of
the phones I've seen also have PIN codes for security too. Not being
aware of the security features available for your phone *and* using
them boils down to user error or laziness- phone crimes are well known.
At the very least it will identify your phone if a thief is caught.

To get the imie number you just key in *#06# on most (all?) mobile
phones.

Don't forget that you also need to tell your operator to bar the SIM
card too- otherwise the thieves can just use it in a different phone.

Users do need to take responsibility for these things.
