Anyone using a water cooling system down here?

I'm eyeing this one: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applica [...] &CatId=499

But I'd probably put water wetter in with the coolant.

Why? You shouldn't trust me you greedy bastard. Why should I spend my money so you can see the results? Buy it yourself then you can tell me how it works and I can save the money to con strippers into entertaining the Other.. then I'll spend the money on something completely pointless like antihistamine for Wingding.

:)

Yup - I buy after some percentage of people have tried it and concurred that it's worthwhile. I love the fact that the human population can be measured under statistics.

I owned a Thermaltake BigWater SE before. I believe 760i is their second generation of water cooling products, but oh boy their first generation sucked, sucked, sucked. The cooling capacity is practically zero, and you'll be better off having the stock cooler on, than dropping those Jacksons on the water cooling systems.

I'm certainly not an expert on this, but I'm sure of the following: The water block must look something like this to maximize surface area.
http://www.swiftech.com/assets/images/products/apogee/apogee-gt-bp.jpg

...and this is Thermaltake 760i's CPU cooler:
http://thermaltakeusa.com/product/Liquid/DIY/cl-w0121/image/02_slim.gif

You won't have much cooling capacity, I guarantee

Anyway, with the same amount of money, I highly recommend this over 760i.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6835108075

However, keep in mind that a 1x120 radiator is only good for a dual core, not a quad core (especially an overclocked one). If you have an overclocked quad, I highly recommend this:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Prod [...] 6835108076

Hope this helps.

p.s. I actually know a very decent water cooling guide, which guides you from start to finish. However, that site apparently is blocked from THG :(.

Surprisingly, using the stock AMD cooler, BIOS states my CPU temp at 30C.. and being that it is extremely quiet, I won't be switching over to water cooling. It was mainly something for me to mess around with. I was looking at some coolers that were about $50-$70 a piece, figuring double that I could go with water.. nah. I'll stick with the stock cooler until summer hits and I'll see how well it does at that point.

@Mugz: It was a long week and I was bored.

Ah. I see.

If you're just using the system, the stock or even an aftermarket aircooler works well enough. The Black Edition AMD aircoolers are pretty close to aftermarket as it is.

I'm only using watercooling because I'm overclocking quite heavily and live in a warmish climate.

It would be something to do.. A novelty at that. Being that upstairs does get warmed in the summer and the thermostat is downstairs, keeping the place cool is trickier. I plan on replacing my furnance and AC unit coming up anyhow which should fix the air circulation with a larger fan.

But it would be a good excuse to get water cooling. :)

It would at that.

The only times I've seen watercooling in non-overclocked setups is when the owner/operator has been going for bragging rights.

I've got a $20 cooler on my 5000+ Black Edition, and it rocks. I haven't OC'ed it much, but I did bump it up 400 MHz.

At idle, I'm around 28 degrees, and the fan is hardly spinning. Usually450 RPM, but I have seen it stop. Under load, I'm usually up around 30 degrees / 950 RPM.

I figured out last night that my chip set fan is super noisy, so I'll have to look into something there. And wonderfully, it sits under my 8800GT, so that restricts me even more!

You went expensive...... I've got a $10 cooler on my Black Edition clocked to 3 gigs & I'm running 23 to 27c.... I believe that with the 65 nm AMD cores you'll run out of core before you heat up OCing.... Heat just isn't an issue even with the cheapest of coolers.....

Frugal is what it is.... I never spend more than I need to on anything....

There's a story behind the cooler.... I got my new build shipped in & went to building.... I went to slap in the CPU & the box felt awful light.... Opened the box & no cooler.... I go WTF???? Then I went back & looked at the ad & it said cooler not included.... I go sh-t!!!!

Being as we only have 3 parts stores that are a year off the cutting edge I figured I was screwed & would have to order on line.... (Let me mention that I actually had 2 machines in the same condition. 1 of them mine & the other for a client)....

Late Fri. night I want in Comp USA... All they had was a god awful looking Zelman cooler I knew was over kill.... The guy said it was the only fan they had for socket AM2.... I bought 2 of them for $38 & went home....

The next morning I went to install the first one & it wouldn't fit... Damm!!! They weren't for socket AM2 at all!!!! I had to take them back....

I went to the next shop & they only had 1 cooler for AM2.... Being as I needed 2 of them I was still screwed.... I didn't want to wait a week to get coolers on line!!!!

Went to the 3rd shop & couldn't find any AM2 coolers & was about to leave.... The guy asked me what I was looking for???? I said socket AM2 coolers & you don't seem to have any..... He said yes we do & came over to where I was looking... He couldn't find any of the either.... Went in the back & came out & said they're in the bargain bin.... There they were, marked $5.... I bought the 2 of them & was I was happy as a bug in a rug!!!

Like I say with the 5000 Black, heat isn't an issue... I've had mine post @ 3.4 gigs, but couldn't finish 3Dmark with it.... I played for quite awhile finding the sweet spot, which ended up being 3.0..... If I kick it up to 3.1 I start crashing in 3Dmark.... I feel that the chip would run @ 3.2 to 3.3 with a voltage mod... One day I will over volt it, after I've had it awhile... But for now I'm really happy with the 5000 Black & the setup I'm running....

I'm going to get a new motherboard and I'll play with the FSB and such a bit. I had mine up @ 3.0 for a week before it BSOD on me. I'm not sure if it was the OC, but I don't think my mobo likes it at all, so I backed down to 2.8, which the mobo still don't like.

As soon as I overclocked it, I lost all my USB devices. It found and reinstalled my mouse on it's own, but my ready boost drive and my headset had to be reinstalled. It was a simple matter of unplugging them and plugging them back in while Windows was running, but it still isn't right.

So I'll tweak it more when I get the new board. Still debating what I want.

I haven't touched the FSB at all.... I've only multiplier OCed.... That's the beauty of the Black, It's multiplier is unlocked & you can change it.... Your board should have a place to change it as well in the BIOS.... If not, you might need to flash to a newer BIOS... On the MSI I can change to whole & half multipliers such as 13, 13.5, 14 & so on.... I've heard, but can't say that it works best on the whole numbers....

stk multiplier = 13
200 = stk FSB before the dual pump, 400
13 x 200 = 2600 or 2.6 gigs.

Change the multiplier to 15
15 x 200 = 3000 or 3.0 gigs.

Change the multiplier to 15.5
15.5 x 200 = 3100 or 3.1 gigs.

I'm running mine at a multiplier of 15.... I haven't tried the 15.5 multiplier yet, but I failed 3Dmark with a 16 multiplier.... I know with a tad more voltage I could run the 16 multiplier without a problem.... However I OC as far as I can with stk voltages.... After I've ran the chip for a year or so, then is when I overvolt them... That way I can buy a cheap replacement CPU if it fails.....

I really don't see a point in over clocking today.. yeah, you get improvements but I don't beleive its significant enough to really keep your system like that.

I have a 5200+..85w I think it was when I bought it. Temps are cool in the case even with a 8800GT running.

You don't see a point to overclocking? I went from roughly 7000 points in 3D Mark 06 to just under 10K by upping my CPU frequency.

@ RC - I understand that the unlocked multiplier is nice, but that chip can do more, I know it. My multiplier won't go any higher than 15, and my board won't support half steps. But there's a good chance I could get the FSB to 230 or so with that 15x multiplier. 230 * 15 = 3450.

Like I said, I don't think my board likes it a whole lot, so I'm looking at getting a new board before I push it. ALso, when you do overvolt it, make sure your cooling is sufficient. I went from 15 to 16 with a decent bump in voltage. My temps were still OK, but they were certainly high. At that point, I do agree that the OC doesn't make much sense. I'm not trying to squeeze my chip into the red and run it constantly. If I find a point where my temps jump a bunch, but it's stable, I'll prolly back it down a bit.

Great, you get points in a program. Aside from running a CPU intensive program, what benefit do you get?

Games have the GPU for a bottleneck. Unless you're running a CPU intensive program, over clocking really doesn't do much. Yeah, you can over clock your GPU as well.. just buy a better card in that case.

Yeah, because I have all kinds of disposable cash to throw at a new GPU or CPU whenever I want. [/sarcasm]

Yes, 3D Mark is just a program, but it shows what kind of improvements you get when you make changes. That was how I found that on my system, the fastest option is to run with a ready boost drive AND a swap file. That turned out to be fastest.

And the game I play is bottle necked by both CPU and GPU. Both upgrades improved my playability.

I dunno, I just overclock the crap outta my rig for the heck of it. It's interesting to see how far the new tech can be pushed, especially when compared to what the old tech could be pushed to.

I don't think my E4500 is going to get me back into the 5GHz club, though... we shall just have to see. (3.41GHz... and counting...)

Yeah, I'm not looking to go that far, but I'm looking to run stable and cool, but as fast as I can.

If I squeeze another 200 MHz out of it but the temp goes up 10 degrees, I'll likely back off again.

My temps have stabilised at about 32ºC idle and 55ºC full load. Ambient room temp is around 22ºC.

My stock temps were 28ºC/40ºC. Quite a jump, and my cooler is going to get upgraded from a modified 60L/h CM Aquagate to a 1100L/h pond pump and Golf 3 heater core.
