Anti-virus scan

Hello,
I am running a full virus scan on my computer (microsoft security essentials). Can someone tell me if this will slow down my computer while the scan is in progress.

I agree with the previous answers.

When I'm running a manual scan, (as you should be doing it in safe mode with networking), I usually just walk away for about 15 minutes, and let it run its course.
