I don't know if it's just me but I find that the ATI lineup to be kind of weird of late. I have been looking in different stores at their lineup and there seems to be a gape in their newest lineup. You have a bunch of sub 100$ cards which I don't personally find very interesting then it goes up the the 16xx series and the next step is right in the 19xx serie. Maybe it's just the naming but I find it rather confusing that a card of the same serie, namely the 19xx, can double in price. I don't know, were I ATI or any other company for that matter, I would make sure that my product could be easily identified and slotted within my spectrum of products.

It's really not all that hard. 800>600>300 series. As far as the Generations, we had the Radeon 9 series like the 9800 pro(high end) 9600 pro(midrange), 9200(low end). The came the 10 series which they used Roman Numer 10. So again X800>X600>X300. Next is the 11 series or X1, where X1800>X1600>X1300. Of course to remain cometetive they need refreshes, so in comes X1900, X1950, X1650, etc. Lastly is the suffix, which for ATI XTX (XTPE) > XT > pro > plain or GT or GTO. And the Suffix can cause an overlap in performance where X1650XT now competes with X1800GTO. Or X1800XT is as good as X1900GT or X1950 pro.

Well, you had the X1800s but now they're no where to be found.

Yes that's what I meant and beside how would they compare against the newer 1650TX . I obviously see the need for a broad spectrum of products but overlapping is not necessarily a good thing IMHO. It would be simpler(is that even a word) to make sure that when you using higher number it simply means that the card is more powerful no matter the suffix or prefix.

No matter what you chose it won't be easy.

We've discussed this many times;
http://forumz.tomshardware.com/hardware/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=203960&highlight=suffix+acronym

and it doesn't matter what you use there will be overlap. Heck you could sell them based on 3Dmark#s, but do you stick with one generation of 3Dmark? And how many times do you see overlap for that (look at the performance in 3Dmk03 versus '06 with many cards, let alone 3Dmk01). You're still going to be stuck with generational differences too, and support for newer features.
