These 2 cards look similar, and in the same price range. While the X1600 has 512 MB of memory@780Mhz and a core speed of 500Mhz, the 7600 GT has 256 MB @1400Mhz and a 560 Mhz core speed. My question is: Which serves a better function for hi-res video displaying and editing w/lots of effects rendering? A little gaming couldn't hurt either. :D

As a wise man once said

"The X1600 series SUCKS"

7600GT and no other choice, God bless Nvidia.....

Yeah I like Nvidia too. Is the increased memory of the X1600 downplayed by the slow speeds? I was thinking that would be the reason.

The increase memory will acutally DEGRADE preformence.

512mb 128bit

4x 128mb compared to

256mb 128

2x 128 which results in less clutter due to the over sized memory but undersize bit bus. Take a look at the VGA if you look at the very bottom the X1300 512 and the 7300LE 512mb are the last ones.

Yah that's cool I just didn't want to spend over 150 bucks for a computer mainly used for video. I hope I can game a little too.

Yeah the X1900 looks pretty sweet but $30 is a big difference for me right now. (probably another few months of saving up) Plus I am not a serious gamer. Maybe I'll get it if my budget changes. Great suggestion though.

7600GT by a long shot. It can be had as for as low as 100USD nowadays (inc rebate).

For any further such questions, you could probably get a faster answer by simply looking at tom's charts - they are not perfect, and perhaps use titles & settings that are fairly demanding and perhaps not typical for everyone (low/mid range cards really score badly in those), but are still a good indication of relative performance.

7600GT definitely. ATI's answer to the 7600GT is the X1650XT, not the X1600XT. The X1650XT can be had for $150 on newegg. The X1800GTO can be had for $5 more, and it is significantly faster than the X1650XT and the 7600GT.

The only complaint is I have seen with the 7600gt card is that the fan is excessively loud. You can read these comments next to the product decription on newegg.com by the user reviews.

Partially true. The BFG card's cooler sounds like a frickin' jet engine!!! I agree, some coolers are really bad on the 7600.

The EVGA card is actually fairly quiet. Not as quiet as the Zalman I had on it, but not bad in all fairness.

Other nice thing about the EVGA card is you could use it towards an EVGA Step-Up ;)
