I have two machines and I wish to transfer files from one, to the other. I am a new PC user and would like to know the steps involved with bringing up one machine onto the other so I can move the files over. I assume I can simply connect the two via a standard ethernet cable, I have a Hub if needs be as well. What sort of steps though do I need to take with the Network Properties and such? Thank You.

File sharing is fairly simple in the basics, but can be quite complicated in all, because files and security are important and variable. So I'm going to cheat, and not attempt a step-by-step here, and instead give you some links I dug up on the subject.

You cannot connect two computers by connecting a standard cat 5 cable to each of their ethernet ports. To do this you would need a "crossover or null modem cable" for it to work. You could do it with a hub by connecting each cat 5 to the Hub from each computer. The hub would act as the "crossover"

My daughter recently wanted to connect her desktop and laptop together at home and went to hardware vendor and asked for these items. (crossover or null modem) The salesmen said they didnt have such a thing, but it was actually cause they didnt have the knowledge of it. These items are made. Null modem connections use the serial ports of each computer.

Step by step instruction would be difficult even if we knew the operating systems. There is a icon in Windows systems for setting up a network. Once the computers are connected properly. There is no problem with sharing as long as you are in trusted home environment and not connected tot he Internet.

This is not hard, it is only the start of it that is the problem. lol!

Good luck!
