I've chosen to get a simple USB video capture device - this allows me to
pipe any video that I want into my computer, for use as a webcam. One day I
can have a B/W infrared security camera, the next day I can have a $500
MiniDV color cam. And if I don't want any cam at all, I can spew video from
my XBOX, DVD player, cable box, whatever.

So if you've already got a camcorder or two, the investment for a USB cap
device makes more sense than trying to buy a good quality standalone webcam.

DVdriver software does this.

You can even us it with a PowerPod robotic base to swivel your
camcorder, but it is optional.
